Not a huge fan of Rudy's; been here multiple times and I'm just not impressed. The service is lousy on a good day and the food is mediocre. Everyone seems to hype about the carne asada here, and it's not that good. There are many good Mexican restaurants in Encinitas that blow Rudy's out of the water. I give Rudy's two stars. 1.5 stars for the location and .5 star for the below average food.

In my research on the perfect California Burrito, the reigning champion is Rudy's. Anytime you walk into a place for a burrito and there is a carnerceria AND a check cashing/convenience store, you know you are in for something special. There has been many a Friday afternoon that I have waited in a line out the door of people cashing their checks and picking up some carne asada or a burrito to go to go. As far as their Burritos go, they get everything right. The tortillas are always fresh and never break open and leak everything out and they always put the perfect ratio of sour cream and cheese to crispy french fries. And the meat. The meat is probably the best part. Since its a carnerceria, they have all the best meats marinated perfectly and ready to go. And when its cooked up right and gets a nice crust on the edge, man, you win. Oh and did I mention that its the size of a small child? You could probably feed a family of four in Mongolia with this thing, but will have no problem putting it back in about 14.32 seconds. The salsa also is the best I have had in San Diego and just perfectly matches the burrito. The staff is very helpful and remembers repeat customers which is always key. Really, other than being out of the way, there is nothing wrong with this place. Get one at your first chance. If you like California Burritos, you would be doing yourself a disservice not to pick one up.

I have been eating there for a year or so, just ordering rolled tacos and quesadillas. Tried the carne asada for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and OMG, the best ever. I am a mexican food snob and this was truly the best. The pollo asada is a close second. Going to try to buy some uncooked and bbq at home.

This is the best carne asada burrito anywhere. Its a simple formula of meat, guacamole and salsa that is perfect. The carne asada is lean but still very flavorful. I stop by every time I drive up or down that part of I-5. My first time there I asked for cheese on my burrito and he kind of made a face and said yes. So I probed him about it and he said, "you can have cheese, but this isnt tace bell, its quality meat" so i skipped the cheese and I am very glad I did

I think I can say that this place without a doubt would win the "best Mexican taqueria in a business park plaza" award in the United States. Weirdest location for a taqueria/Mexican market/weird hangout for kids I've seen, but the food there is admittedly good. Based on everyone's rantings and raves about their carne asada, I went there to get my usual, a California burrito, and it was excellent, but not quite what I expected. The carne asada was very obviously marinated in some sorta of sweet seasoning, which was delicious, but it just wasn't carne asada for me. It actually tasted more like an Asian beef, even almost Korean BBQ-esque, than Mexican. Like I said, it's not a bad thing, but being a Korean myself, when you eat Korean BBQ every other week or more, it doesn't taste all that special. Still, for you whiteboys, go for it and ch-ch-check it out; it's definitely worth your time and money.

First time there I thought it was the best carne asada burrito I had ever partaken of. The quality of the carne was high quality, almost pure bred, if you know what I am saying. The ratio of guac to meat made burrito perfection. Unfortunately...Three subsequent visits have been a major let down due to the fact there was about one spoonful of guac in the burrito. You know it's bad when the recession effects your burrito. Now, I could ask for more guac so my burrito is not so dry but then I don't want to be "that guy." I also don't want to risk the loogie factor. I'll keep going back and just hope for more guac or maybe one of the employees will read this and be more conscientious of putting the perfect amount of guacamole in my burritos.

I love this place. It's absolutely delicious and super fresh. It doesn't get any better than this. The chicken quesadilla is my favorite.

I don't understand why the ratings for this place is so high on yelp. Yelp lead me wrong on this one. I ordered a Carne Asada burrito to go. The meat just tasted burnt and smokey to me. I was missing the good flavor and the tasty marinade that was supposed to make it good. It looks like a liquor store to me, kind of run down too. Not so much of a Mexican joint.

If you want authentic Mexican food, definitely go to Rudy's! They have the most amazing tortillas. I always get the carne asada plate or the carnitas plate. Awesome food at a low price!

You know when you have a favorite spot, but other people have this other favorite spot, so you try hard to be unimpressed once you finally try theirs because you're convinced yours is better? Well don't do that at Rudy's. It has the market cornered on chaotic third-world taqueria/markets with insufficient seating in SB, but the food is totally worthy. I tried to hate on the B&C burrito because the beans therein had undergone some serious liquefaction. It was like a water weenie with beans. The mighty tortilla, however, maintained structural integrity like a champ, and there was no evidence of cost-cutting through holding back on cheese. When coupled with their superb hot sauce, the burrito was most honorable. I also tried to hate on the "street taco." The "street taco" al pastor was a really little taco, like a tiny baby taco. It's the Liechtenstein of tacos. If a taco could be called cute, it would be this taco. However, those two bites were totally worth $.75 each. And applying green sauce to "street tacos" can be so tiresome sometimes, so it's nice that Rudy goes ahead and takes care of that for you. I can still be miffed that fish tacos aren't on the menu. Otherwise, Rudy's handily won me over.

Go here for carne asada burritos, tacos, fries.

This rating is mostly for the street tacos. Prepared perfectly with 2 small corn shells, meat of choice, and green salsa. Of which I tried: Carne Asada: Tender, lean, a bit smokey. If you've ever been down to mexico, you'll relate to the amazing taste on this meat. Lengua: Soft, melt in your mouth, briskety taste. This is everything you want out of jewish deli-style beef tongue, mixed with corn, spicy green salsa, and fresh onions. TOPS. Carnitas: From what I can tell, they slow roast a bunch of pork, and then pull it from the bone and flash pan fry it. You're left with a crispy surface of tender pulled pork, and a sweet/spicy sauce that pulls it all together. Magical. Cabeza: As with the lengua, simply melts in your mouth. There's a misconception that cabeza is 'brain', but it's actually beef cheek, which is a very tender and delicious cut from the cow. And seriously, if your in the business of eating animal parts, whats the difference?? Try this for some serious flavor and not-as-chewy-as-the-competitors texture. It's great! Ok, and lastly, people, the breakfast burritos are the best I've ever had in San Diego. Bacon, is REAL.. crispy, thin, actual, bacon! Mixed with hash browns, omelet style egg, and whatever else floats your boat. I recommend adding refried, cheese, and salsa fresca.. awwwesome. Order here and enjoy the authenticity!

For the very best carne asada I've yet to find, Rudy's in the Eden Gardens area of Solana Beach is it, as well as their new location in La Costa. Their carne asada is so beefy as to taste much like a rustic, artisan-made beef jerky, but with none of the toughness. One of the best features of their carne asada is the "just right" amount of char that they achieve. I think it's best presented in their torta, which is where I think the coarsely cut morsels are best tasted, especially when eaten open-faced (I usually discard the top of the bun in order to strike a better balance between the beef and the bread)... flickr.com/photos/akatay…

  • Hang L.

Their california burrito is superb! The meat is tender, portion size is big, and best of all it's only $5. Parking could be a huge pain and the line can be long but don't let it intimidate. Service is quick and you'll be munching down in no time!

  • Checko-Wing S.

It's hard to give this place anything less than 5 stars because it is more of a take out establishment, but their mexican food is as good as it gets and it is very affordable. Also, any place where you can pick up a great burrito, a 6-pack of beer, and a roll of toilet paper....I mean, come on people...

    (5)
  • Garrick O.

Great Carne asada. I don't really pass a taco shop named rudy's, roberto's, or rigoberto's and expect anything less than mexican food that would satisfy my hunger and with enough hot sauce taste great. Rudy's switches that up the carne asada is good thick, fresh, and hearty. If you compare the carne asada to other shops it doesnt compare because the meat is not chopped up into little pieces and stuck in a warming tray all day.

  • Dan K.

Love this place! The gal and I always stop by here for a quick burrito on our way down to San Diego. Their carne asada burrito is very good; I'm usually more of a carnitas guy, but I make an exception here. The pollo burrito is also quite good, but you may need a knife and fork. I'm looking forward to trying out more of what they have in the future. What makes this place a 5-star rating for me is their hot sauce. It's the perfect combination of heat and flavor, and I like plenty of both! Every time I come, I want to take one of those bottles of sauce home. It alone makes the trip worth it--that's how awesome it is!

I'm taking Rudy's down a star based on my experience last night. My boyfriend surprised me with a veggie from Rudy's and I was utterly disappointed. It was quite sad as I have such an affinity for Rudy's... The rice was very wet and the entire thing was guac with hardly any beans (critical in a veggie burrito)... and the guac wasn't even flavored well. The hot sauce was lacking in spice compared to normal. Maybe just an off night, but definitely sticking to Nico's in del mar for my veggie fixes. I still maintain that their chicken burritos are the best.

Voy aqui para las salsas (la salsa roja esta ricisima!) y quesos. Los burritos son ricos, tambien.

  • Kevin K.

I had a beef burrito here the other night. It was amazing. It's the second best burrito I've had in San Diego. The best was La Playa in Mission Beach. They put beans and cheese in their burritos. Not sure why more SD places don't do this but I love it. I added guac to mine and it was the perfect combo. They also lightly toast their tortillas, almost nobody doest that either! They use shredded beef, and I love me some shredded meat!! It took like 2.5 seconds for them to make it but somehow it was crazy good quality. I would drive from my home in PB to this place again for damn sure! My advice: Get a burrito and drive down to Del Mar dog beach to eat and and watch the sunset. Does it get any better??

Great food at a great price! Don't be fooled by the rough-looking exterior. Rudy's is our "go-to" place when we want Mexican fast food. My husband swears by the carne asada burrito. I highly recommend the chile relleno, fiesta tostada and my kids love the carne asada taco (without salsa...the salsa is SPICY!). In addition to the great tasting food, Rudy's taco shop is a small Mexican market. One of my favorite things to buy is fresh pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread). Rudy's will not disappoint!

This is my go-to place for street tacos or carne asada burritos.

  • Shelly S.

AMAZING carne asada!!! CRISPY chicken tacos to die for!!! The shell isn't a greasy disaster (a la Roberto's). It's actually what it should be - crispy and capable of holding the awesome shredded chicken and toppings inside of it. SALSA with a kick - and ALWAYS delish! Super nice people, fast service, fresh food, always busy, so call ahead! (Also a new location in Carlsbad - check it out!)

Awesome place! I am a huge mexican food fan and a regular at the fast mexican food places in PB at 2am when im wasted. California burrito is always my go to snack and Rudy's makes the best one iv ever had, by far!

I've searched for a place just like this ever since I relocated from Los Angeles. All the comments here about the burritos tasting homemade and the incredible guacamole and pico de gallo are correct. I've only tried a few items off the menu but I've been satisfied with everything so far.

Hands down this place has the best carne asada in all of san diego county. I grew up in SD and I work all over SD county. I have tried literally hundreds of carne asada burritos. The hot sauce is ridiculous as well. AMAZING chicken rice cheese and guacamole burrito as well. DO IT!!

  • Virginia G.

Great food. Even though I'm a vegetarian, I still really enjoy their burritos. Everyone at my former work place ate there at least once a week. I hear the carne asada is great. The food is ENORMOUS, so there was always enough for lunch the next day.

Amazing Mexican food! Very fast, friendly service and super cheap burritos! I had an amazing carne asada burrito and it was delicious. I highly recommend it!

  • Kauveh S.

OK. I am going to go on a limb and say that the carne asada burrito was one of the best I have had in San Diego. Santana's is the best! However, this hidden gem crated a burrito that was worth dying for. The bread they used was mouth watering, and the meat just perfect. I will be back with A-Po. The only reason that this place didn't get 5 stars was that the outside patio tables were filthy and should be cleaned more regularly. Wow, I am getting hungry just writing this post.

  • Brant W.

Ok, best California Burrito ever. Congratulations. Wow... the Carne Asada is amazing. It's like a cross between shredded beef, beef jerkey, barbecue beef, and wonderful tasting Carne Asada. The tortilla is excellent. Perfect amount of french fries, cheese, and sour cream. This thing is excellent. Good job, guys.

  • Travis F.

This is the best, most "low pro" taco shop in San Diego. You can get a Mexican Street Taco for $1.25 and a massive burrito for $4 and change. There is not a thing on the menu that isn't A-OK, and as my belly exemplifies I can speak from experience. The only bad thing about this place is that it's a 30 second drive from my house and I have to see it on my way home from work every day. By the way, if you see Rudy and talk about his beloved Club America, you're sure to get in good.

    (5)
  • John T.

Quite possibly the best carne asada burrito ever. The meat is really tasty and it's way better than most places. You would never know from driving by that it has amazing Mexican food. My gf had the combo with chille relleno and taco - that was good too.

Rudy's is the quintessential taco shack/convenience store, but they have a style and a flavor that makes them special. Their "veggie" breakfast burrito (I remove bacon and add beans, as well as guac and if i'm in the mood salsa/tomatoes) is the BEST cure for a Saturday hangover MUY Delicious and HUGE! Best of all in my cheap-ass view, they let you swap out items without charging you (you have to fight for that in other places) AND they don't charge you an arm and a leg to add stuff in. It makes a big difference for us veggie types. Everyone is VERY friendly, and you can buy their large tortillas they use to make burritos (and make sickeningly large burritos at home) as well as smaller authentic flavor ones in their convenience section area. Love their nachos and quesadillas (once had them make me a special breakfast quesadilla ). As a huge note though, DON'T GO FOR THE ENTREES! Found them overpriced for what you get as compared to the burritos. Burritos = big, cheap, and yummy! Entrees = small, plain, and pricey (at least, the veggie entrees ala chile rellenos) SO, stick with the burritos and you'll be happy. So, because of their entree sadness they only get 4 stars. If I can find a place that has it all (fantastic tostadas, burritos, nachos, and entrees, they'll get a 5-er...)

Best carne asada that I've had hands-down. I remember coming here for the first time after AP testing, biting down into a signature carne asada, and having that realization of what authentic Mexican was like for the first time. The fact that there is fresh meat readily available probably explains why the beef is particularly tasty. The prices are all extremely reasonable and since it doubles as a convenience store you won't be lacking for beverages, snacks, etc. The only bad aspect about Rudy's is the not-so-spectacular seating and somewhat uncleanly feeling, which I actually find adds to the authenticity.

i was torn between goin here or to bongiornos pizzaria rudys is always bueno...so i figured the last time i was here i went italian, so it was time to go mex. the joint is for real, the have a market there so you can get your mex food and groceries while your waiting for the food. i had a carne asada burrito, it was great as usual. sat down and had lunch w some guys on break. my only problem is that there aint room to eat. the bar they have seats maybe 6 peeps or you can sit outside..its really a minor problem, the food is always good and fresh. go eat. its muy good-o

  • Efren P.

This is the most authentic Mexican food in all of San Diego County. I can't believe some of the lame comments people have made about Rudy's not being real & not being authentic. Tex Mex food sucks, so if you grew up east of El Centro, you wouldn't understand how good this stuff really is. There are only 2 locations & they have it locked down from Oceanside to La Jolla. Rudy & Mario are really cool guys & the staff is very helpful when you need something special done up. If you have never been to Rudy's, you have never had a good meal!!!.

  • Joe S.

Any taco shop that shares its space with a convenience store has to be authentic, I believe. Rudy's was no exception. I got the carne asada burrito, per usual, and wow it was literally ready in 1 minute (there were no orders ahead of me). This had me mildly worried, that it was sitting premade under a heat lamp or something, but I think they are just pretty quick. There are a couple of things that I look for in a burrito, namely meat quality, ratio of guacamole/salsa to meat, and distribution of g/s to meat. Rudy's, being a market as well, had some excellent quality meat - no noticeable grizzle, and deliciously tender. However the marinade was not quite what I'm used to. Another reviewer compared it to Korean BBQ, and I think that is pretty apt. It was sweet ("sugar" sweet, not "dude" sweet). This was in no way bad, but in the future, knowing this, it would impact if I was in the mood for Rudy's, or a more traditionally marinaded carne asada (though finding meat as quality would be tough). The ratio of guacamole to meat was quite good, however the distribution was a little off - I had a flash flood on both ends encompassing the Sahara in the middle. Because the meat was so tender and thinly sliced it wasn't like chewing cotton, but I would have preferred it to be more evenly spread out. The provided hot sauce was also good, though more than one variety is always nice. I took my tasty burrito down the block to a nice little park (ambiance and atmosphere for dining in is not a strong suit of Rudy's), and overall very much enjoyed my Rudy's experience.

This restaurant/convenience store always has good food. My favorite is the carne asada burrito with cheese and guacamole. The prices are decent and service is really fast. I love getting the Bimbo powdered donuts for dessert after! You can never go wrong with Rudy's.

Carne asada burrito has really fresh guacamole/onion/tomato inside. Tortilla is deliciously chewy with slight char. Housemade hot sauce is fresh and spicy. A meal for under $5! Only complaint is that I wish they had more indoor seating for the rare cold winter day like today. The indoor seats along the window were occupied when I visited. But the outside patio was pretty tho

Believe it or not I used to go here before my dance classes, most specifically jazz funk on tuesday nights back in high school. I couldn't resist the deliciousness of Rudy's even when I knew I would be uncomfortably full in my dance class. I usually just got a combo with a chicken taco and chicken enchilada. I need to go back to refresh my memory more of how these tasted specifically, but I do remember them being quite tasty. The place is inside a liquor store/ mini mart so its a little sketch. Located in the same plaza are two of my other solana faves: Annie's and Bongiornos.

  • Patrick M.

I do NOT understand why people like this place. If you like *real* Mexican food do not eat here. It's just pure Cali-Mex and Tex-Mex, it's a very dirty place and the meat is simply poor quality. People are so ridiculous if they think places like Rico's, Rudy's, and Roberto's have delicious Mexican food. Why do you see NO Mexicans eating at these places? Because it is a very poor imitation and an insult to true Mexican cuisine.

I dont care about what the haters say about the food. Its pretty good, but where else can you go and get tacos and a 40oz. in one purchase. Nuff said. You can order by txt message now too!

For all of you Carne Asada Cabezas, look no further! I've only lived in Solana Beach for two years, but I was born and raised on the best damn Mexican food in the state-in America's finest city-and this my fellow burrito addicts is in my top five! After nearly 8 years of living in north county, my only regret is that I never made the trek up from south county for one of these masterful creations... This carne asada tastes like something Pancho Villa would of ate. Why... The carne asada is flavorful (they use a marinate that only adds to the quality of the meat), the meat isn't questionable in it's origins it's tender and juicy, the amount of meat in the burrito is generous, and the amount of guacamole that they add doesn't take away from the flavor of the burrito-it just accentuates it. Simply put this burrito is a masterpiece. If you enjoy burritos from Roberto's, Filibertos. Frankbertos, Juanbertos, Billybertos...and of the cousins, second cousins, or in-laws of the Berto, don't bother with this burrito, it's too tasty for you. It is too much for your taste buds to dicpher...

  • Joshua C.

Ok, so this is an easy review. Go there. Go there now. Go there tomorrow. Go there all the time. And if you don't like this place then you should tap out on Mexican food. This is the real deal. The carne asada is retardedly good and for me that is the true test of a taco shop (much like brisket at a BBQ restaurant). The Califonia Burrito is perfect. The street style tacos are outstanding. The beans are delicious as are the tortillas. I have nothing bad to say about this place. Some people are put off by the fact that its in a run down looking liquor store but I think it's awesome. The best mexican food (as you should know if you're from SD) comes from the most beat up looking places. Otherwise Chipotle would have the worlds best Mexican food (which of course they don't).

So good it's disgusting. By far the best taco shop in the Del Mar/Solana Beach area

  • bart z.

Rudy, start tasting. Your carne Asada taco was chewy cheap undercooked beef, old tomatoes. My over boiled chicken burro was pretty darn salty, and the extra tomatoes were not. Too bad, as I've been coming for decades, and your family is so nice

  • Helaana C.

Ok Ok I listened to all of you and and tried this place. Sort of weird walking into a run down liquor store/ Mexican food market to order your tacos but after reading the reviews i was down to take the risk. All i have to say is DELICIOUS! The green sauce the put on the street tacos is spicy and flavorful not what i would expect from liquor store fare. My husband rates the California burrito as one of the best he has had. We have been there now on several occasions and its been awesome each and every time. So next time your over waiting for a table at Fidel's or Tony's hit up this place down the street.

Probably my favorite taco shop in San Diego. Carne Asada is primo. Breakfast burrito and CA burrito are the best in town.

A delicious sack of meat for $5. Hurry! Hurry!

  • John K.

OMG! This place is so cheap! A Carne Asada Burrito and a large soda will set you back $8.00 and feed you for two days. The parking lot is a nightmare. Park on Stevens Ave West, a side street across the street. Also, this is a Mexican food market, so if you're looking for products from Mexico, this is the place.

Hands down one of my favorite burrito shops. I mostly get the Carne Asada burrito but all the burritos are great. Nice location to dine in not like all the other corner shops. You can also buy raw meat at market prices. They also do catering.

let me start off by saying one thing "BOMBDIGGITY!!" that's right, this is my new mexican spot. if you haven't tried it, you're definitely missing out. you gotta try their chorizo burrito with squeeze of lime. it'll bring the party to yo' mouth!!

California Burrito was good. Lots of meat, not too many fries. Very meaty if you're into that. Excellent price for the area, but I prefer Santana's.

  • Dave R.

Food sucked. My wife got the Cal and how do ya screw that up. I have had better from Taco Bell. I do have to say I did not have the tacos but they did look good so dont take my word on them just the Burrito.

  • Mike D.

I got a chicken tostada and a chicken taco, and the chicken itself was extremely flavorful. I'm not sure why another reviewer said their chicken is bland. The lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese were all fresh and crispy (well, the cheese was not crispy, and thankfully so). Great portions and lots of meat (but not an overwhelming amount) on each item. EXCELLENT value for the low price. Will definitely go back.

I just ate the best carne asada burrito I have EVER had! And I love carne asada burritos so I've had a lot of them. I went at about 12:45 on a Friday afternoon. The parking lot was packed, I parked on the street. Ruby's is a liquor store/mexican take out place. You can buy a 12 pack of beer, a burrito, and some mexican pastries for dessert all at the same place. Ruby's was busy and everyone ordering, eating and waiting was mexican. This was a very good sign. I stepped up to the counter and placed my order, was handed a number and waited less then 5 minutes for my bag of yummyness. My car smelled so good my mouth was watering on my way back to the office. The tortilla had been put on the griddle so it was a little toasted and chewy. The carne asada inside, oh my god...so good! The meat was just a little charred around the edges, super tender and very flavorful all on its own. (I picked some out to try by it's self.) The salsa (huge fan of salsa) was very good as well. It was very fresh and I could actually see bits of cilantro in it but it was very smooth and pourable. I wish I was still hungry cuz I want more. I told the other people in my office about it and we are all going next week for lunch. I know it maybe a drive for some but it really so delicious. I would have taken a picture of the burrito but it was gone so fast. Next time, I promise.

Delicious soft tacos and guacamole! I've never had the California Burrito but have heard it's the best in town! Would give it a 5 star but we ordered at 845 (they close at 9) and they were in quite a rush to close the kitchen. Food was great though

I've been to a lot of Mexican restaurants in east LA and I have to say this place is great! My mom and I split the Baja tacos and carne asada tacos. The fish was perfectly battered and not too crispy, the salsa is delicious, and the the tortillas are to die for. The same goes for the Carne asada and and the meat was well spiced and juicy. I wish I didn't live 2 hours away or I would come here every weekend. Good prices and great food. Also a plus, they have cotija cheese and indoor/outdoor seating!

This place looks sketchy from the outside since the restaurant is inside of a little market but one of THE BEST California burritos I've ever eaten. Honestly! Home made tortilla sour cream cheese and super lean meat!!! Mmmmmm...I'm hungry!!

I love this place. It's weird because it has so much going on. Convenience store, food, indoor and outdoor seating, TVs always playing sports, beer, crowded parking lot. But its weird in a good way. There are a couple of men who work there who are super cool, just chat them up at the register. I go here all the time because its fast, convenient, and excellent burritos. Also, the salsa is great!

Great place to get a good sized portion burrito. I ordered the CALI burrito with guac ($6). The guac contained something spicy, and I didn't care for it. I requested well done fries and they weren't well enough to my liking. The meat portion was generous - just huge chunks. I did try their breakfast burrito and it was actually pretty descent. I like bacon by itself, and not mixed into dishes, etc. In this case, the bacon added the crunch factor to the burrito, which made it pretty tasty. There's limited seating inside the restaurant/store and a patio section with about 5-6 tables. Parking lot is shared with other restaurants in the shopping center.

I live right around the corner but never stopped in until I saw them ranked as one of the top burrito joints in San Diego. Even better than that they sell their Carne Asada by the pound, I went home with a whole tray of this amazing stuff last weekend and got rave reviews from everyone at our party. Quite possibly the best Carne Asada flavor in the area!

Carne Asada burrito is tops in San Diego for me. Worth the drive. The roasted tender beef is unique to any place I've tried. My kids love the California burrito. In house tortillas, authentic Mexican snack items, friendly servicio de atención al cliente, outdoor and indoor seating, accepts American Express, gives this place 5 stars. The only improvement I suggest is to bring back the avocado based salsa at the salsa bar that I haven't seen the last few times. Open a place like this in Coronado and make a mint. There is no competition here.

When I pulled up outside Rudy's and saw the decor, I was prepared to be disappointed. I'm glad I gave the place a try. One Carnes Asada Burrito later, I can say this place serves some of the best Mexican food I've ever had.

Had the grilled fish tacos. Delicious! Salsas were great too. It had that "hole in the wall mexican joint" vibe to it. It reminded me of the taco stands you see down in ensenada.

Best California Burrito in North San Diego by a long shot! And there scratchers seem to be lucky too!

I really should give a proper review instead of just yummy yummy yummy. Their menudo and their carne asada burritos are a given and they are AMAZING. But the reason I come here, is for their veggie tacos. They load these bad boys with sour cream, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, guac, beans and onions and it hits my spot every time. And for $2 each you can't be beat. PLUS, they accept AMEX!!!! Thank you Mexican friends that accept AMEX and for understanding this chick NEVER has cash. So I love you and I'll always be back.

Lacking in ambiance but the burritos were so good that I could care less. We wanted to cap off a weekend jaunt to SD with burritos and a little beach time so we stopped by Rudy's to load up on food and drinks. The carne asada is amazing. Normally I don't care for carne asada (usually too dry and not as good as cabeza or lengua) but I really liked Rudy's version. The meat came in strips and had a nice chew that went well with the guacamole in the burrito. My BF had the carnitas burrito which was moist but well crisped. He liked it a lot. The burritos were super dense and filling (I am used to LA burritos that have rice) and I joked that that is why SD is so chill: everyone is dealing with food coma from the burritos here. Tasty pina agua fresca. Not enough places on the Westside (LA) serve it. Next time I am in the area I will definitely try the carne fries.

Great tacos. I've tried the asada, pastor, and carnitas and am by far most impressed with the carnitas and asada. The carnitas are tender and the asada too- both have great flavor. The pastor is good too, just not as good as I've had at other places. Salsa bar is good too. I'm not usually a green salsa person but the green salsa is tasty here.

This is a blink and you'll miss it find in Solana Beach! I feel like people probably speed by it on the way to Fidels, but the local's know whats up! Looks just like a corner store, parking kinda sucks, Def a hole in the wall.However...for that quick lunch on a busy day, skip the fast food drive thru and run into Rudy's. Lot's of traditional items to choose from and fast fast fast. I had the Carne Asada burrito the other day and it was decent sized with salsa, guac, and meat. I've had better quality meat for sure but the ingredients were fresh! Simple and to the point....kinda like this review...aaahthankyou!

I love this place. Delicious veggie burrito, and their chile relleno is sooo good. The people who have left poor reviews need to get their taste buds fixed. Love the guy who runs this place too, always so nice. Glad they added some tables inside, before it was just a single counter or outside on the patio. Would be great if they added some lighting to the patio so you could sit outside after it gets dark. Awesome place to stop for some dinner before catching a show at Belly Up.

This place is almost complete garbage. I was there with my family and ordered a lot of food and everything was simply not good, nothing here taste like real Mexican good or even good old Chicano taco shop. The al pastor was mediocre why even call it that? It is really hard to fail at carne asada but these guys failed with pride and don't get me started with the signs "for your information we don't have sauce, we have salsa" and "don't add sour cream to your burritos. This isn't taco bell, it's Mexican food" I don't even think that's Mexican food and barely passes for food. Service wasn't very good either. anyways long story short just don't go there and get something worth your money.

Simply...the BEST Carne Asada in the world!

  • Nicholas P.

Rudy's continues to impress with excellent quality and a mellow, non-pretentious vibe. I've now had a few menu items, everything tasted fresh and great and none came with a mandatory nap, which is refreshing. The taco shop doubles as a liquor store and otherwise one stop shop for essential mercado needs (tortillas, drinks, meats, beer, pan dulce, some produce, chips, beer and an array of authentic mexican candy) This is a potential goldmine shop to supply for a weekend of barbecue or just a quick lunch carryout. Prices are fair, the salsa is spicy and so far everything is delicious! Try the chicken if you are not fully in the grips of carne asada, I highly recommend it!

  • Scott B.

I agree that sometimes the carne asada comes out too salty but in general this place is great! The steak they use here is unlike other places, it's tender. If the salt scares you try the carnitas, good stuff.

After reading lots of review about how Rudy's has the best carne asada, I had to come see for myself. Thoughts on Carne Asada: Like what most people said, it's actually pieces of steak. Real meat. However, I thought they charred the meat a little too much. I would've prefered it not to be so well done/charred. But the thick flanks of carne asada was pretty good regardless. We got carne asada fries too, and they are very generous with the sour cream, guacamole and cheese. It was rather delicious with the thick cuts of meat. Fries were crispy and good. A friend got the al pastor burrito. It was pretty different than the ones I usually have. I don't think the marinade was quite right because the meat was a bit sweet. They also added carmelized onions in it. The al pastor was okay. Not what I expected. I think I would probably skip it next time. Oh, and the meat was clearly chopped up instead of sliced, so I don't think they actually have the meat rack thing. Anyways, stick with the carne asada.

We stumbled onto this little Mexican place, after searching for a pizza place (for the kids) across the way. I decided to give this place a try, and ordered a few of the "Mexican street tacos" which, judging from the name and price ($1.45 each), are smaller versions of regular tacos. The Pastor tacos (seasoned pork) were amazing! And just the right size if you wanted to try other meats (Carne Asada, Carnitas, etc.) Service was friendly and easy, it's mostly an order and pickup type place. There are a few tables inside if you wanted to eat there.

Don't know how I overlooked this place, living in the area for years. Once I found this hole in the wall place, I was hooked. Their carne asada burrito keeps me coming back - way to often. Need to pick up fresh tortillas or something else to add Mexican flavor to your menu? They've got it in their little market. The place is hopping at lunch time with local working folks in the know, but off-hours you'll have pretty quick service, a seat on their patio (my dog loves to lounge under the table & catch anything that misses my mouth), and tasty tasty carne. Awesome.

This place used to be the best until the new ownership took over. I never had any bad experiences until the last few times. Most recently, came in on Halloween night around 8. I walk through the door and get a glare like I shouldn't be there. The place was empty but 2 Hispanics watching the game on TV. The man who gave me the unwelcoming look was wiping down the salsa bar, I'm waiting at the register and he slowly makes his way over. No greeting but "what can I get for you". I ordered a carnitas street taco and California burrito. While I waited, an older gringo couple walked in and he gave them the same look. I watched as they ordered and you could tell with his body language he didn't want to deal with them. The man brought my food over not much later. The taco was barely warm and not savory like the previous carnitas used to be. My burrito was cold and maybe 30% of it was actually filled with Carne Asada. The top half was all sour cream with some cheese and stale cold fries. The next person who walked through the door was a Hispanic man buying a beer. The man managed to strike up cheery conversation with him as well as the other 2 watching the game. So maybe this place only wants to cater to their own. Idk but the food sucked, so did the service and vibe. They changed the salsa too. A creamy green one that was okay and a red one that's watered down and not spicy. I like what they're trying to do with the place as far as beers on tap, happy hour, more seating and tv but work on better customer service and execution of your food! Maybe then you'll stay in business. I won't be back until I hear it's changed for the better. Go to El Nopalito market off Santa Fe dr. if you're looking for authentic mexican and good customer service.

I ordered the Carne Asada fries/nachos and i wasn't too impressed with it. You definitely get large portion and the sour cream and guacamole and other condiments come in large portions, but what threw me off was the meat. Idk if I got the overly cooked Carne asada but my taste buds didn't like it.

Gave Rudy's another shot a few weeks ago. Had a couple Al Pastor street tacos and a carnitas street taco....that's more like it Rudy's! Bump you up a star! Plus, nice new beer selection. Will be back!

I have to say that you will not find any better Carne Asada in the Southern California area. The meat is tender, cooked and seasoned well. Best served in the Taco form. As far as the atmosphere, don't expect more than your ordinary small Taco shop connected to a small convenience store with a patio. The second best Carne Asada Tacos I have had in the So Cal area are at Mas Fina Cantina.

  • Jay L.

Get a carne asada sometjing...it's tasty shit. I got the torta and it was good...the bread really makes a difference and there's was good, but I've had better. Their bread was a little soft and got mushy. The meat is where they shine though and that's what gets 4 stars. In a burrito or taco, it'd be perfect. It's a little out of the way, so I don't know that I'll be back soon. If I am in Solana though, I know where to go. You know it's legit because they have a window to change and send money to Mexico right in the place as well as a Mexican market.

I made the huge mistake of ordering carne asada fries even though I was pushing the seams of my pants after eating pizza and kettle corn. Call me a glutton; even though I was about ready to puke my guts out from literally having too much in my stomach, I was still able to appreciate this masterpiece. I was expecting a french-fries version of nachos -- finely chopped steak bits mixed with salsa, guac, and sour cream with melted cheese. What I got from Rudy's was exactly that but on steroids. The carne asada pieces were no joke - huge, tender pieces with a perfectly smoked flavor. Plenty of guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo was piled on top of the mass of fries, melted cheese, and carne asada. Their pureed chipotle salsa made the flavor really crisp and fresh with just a hint of spiciness. Business is located in a small unassuming mini-mart. Patio seating is situated to the side of the mini-mart.

Best fish tacos I've had. Good grilled fish and lots of fresh toppings. Salsa bar has many choices. The new avocado salsa spicy and delicious. They have beer signs but it's because connected to a convenient store. Little bummed couldn't drink a beer with my tacos but the tacos are well worth going. My husbands breakfast burrito looked good and he said tasted good.

Have I been eating bad burritos all my life before I came to to this place?! Rudy's packs alot of Savory tender Carne Asada Meat, Guacamole, and maybe a little cheese...that's it. No cutting corners with rice, beans, and sour cream. And it's all wrapped up in a fresh tortilla for an affordable price. Loved it so much, I took another one to go all the way back to the OC.

Some people in our yoga class were telling my boyfriend about this place and how great it was. Every once in a while I crave taco shop food so we took their advice and came here for lunch and it was delicious! I got the chicken tostada and the bf got his staple Cali burrito which passed his standards. Nothing was too greasy either, pretty light. Sometimes taco shops mess up guac and make it really watery but their guac was legit, thick and fresh. The hot salsa is really tasty too. Good choice!

  • Lisa S.

Not sure all the rave reviews are warranted but the al pastor is pretty good. We tried one taco with every option and we both agreed the al pastor was the best. The woman at the counter wasn't friendly and couldn't do math, glad I was paying attention, and it is very odd inside with the food counter and mini mart. Definitely would not make a special stop but if you're in the area and craving street tacos, the al pastor will satisfy.

My go-to taco shop for probably 12 years now and they have my absolute favorite salsa in all of SD. I'd put it in a damn keg and tap it if I could.

Holy mother of pearl. The Al Pastor Burrito is FREAKIN delicious. Before I took a bite, I had asked for salsa, and the guy gave me a hesitant look and was like, "Okay.." haha There was no need to put salsa.. Each bite is packed with so much meat and spicy marinade. YOWZA.

Everyone has there own take on taco shops but i think this is one of the best ive been too. Yes its part of a convenience store & could use a make over but I like that. Every meal has been good, especially the carne asada. Its real, strips, "grain" and has flavor and taste. Head over to the better known stands and you will get square chopped pieces of some sort of beef but it aint Carne Asada. Sauce is good, love the signs about salsa and sour cream, very funny. I think this place is legit. So far so good.

I live 2 blocks away from this fine establishment. The best damn burrito in north county! Every burrito on the menu is amazing, but if you have an opportunity to get Rudy's for breakfast, get the breakfast burrito with avocado AND add carne asada, you will not be disappointed! ENJOY!!

This place is always packed whenever we go to the pizza place across the parking lot. I was on my way to catch the train and stopped here for a breakfast burrito - eggs, cheese, bacon, potatoes ($4.50). It was good but I felt like I mostly tasted the tortilla, it was probably one of the smallest breakfast burritos I've ever had.

Interesting location. A bit out of the way. I never would have found it without yelp. I tried the carnitas and carne asada in Mexico City style tacos. I really liked the tortilla and the grilled meats. The carne asada especially had really good flavor. I also had a fried beef taco. The shell was okay and the beef was pretty good. I much prefer fried tacos at El Indio. The staff here was nice and very fast cooking my order. This place is going on my rotation of fav places to get carne asada tacos.

Hole in the wall! Cheap burrito in a grocery store! All the reviews says enough about this place... nothing more I can say...

  • Justin G.

Really solid food here, don't let the minimart storefront scare you off. Love the carne asada which is definitely a different texture than a lot of the stewed carne asada out there, and is IMO one of the best selling points. As another reviewer noted, it can come off as dry --until you lather on their salsa. Prices are good, portion sizes decent, even if not the behemoth sizes of some places. Definitely one of the better North County shops.

  • Matthew S.

I ate a bean and cheese burrito. It was passable, but nothing special. The tortilla was over-warmed and too crispy. The beans were mediocre. The hot sauce was a flavorless generic red that did not add anything to the meal. I was hoping for a good bean and cheese on my lunch break and was disappointed.

    (2)
  • Jessica T.

I was really disappointed by the carne asada at this place. The meat in my burrito was dry, stringy, and over salted.

  • Natalie F.

I LOVE their chile rellenos. I love their tacos. I love them. Good price, super close to where I work, good service, what more could you ask for? Located in what is also a convenience store, I love the hole-in-the wall feel. I think it adds a bit of placebo effect to an already good taco shop. Their tortillas are delicious and super fresh and soft as well! I crave Rudy's on a weekly basis and self control seems to go out the window, because it is oh so delicious. Buen trabajo, Rudy's. Tengo hambre cuando pienso en ti.

  • Bethany G.

The absolute best carne asada burrito I have ever tasted. I can't even count how many different places I have eaten carne asada burritos over the years but Rudy's is the tastiest, and it is not even close. A lot of places I go to go overboard with all the extra stuff and seem to skimp on the carne asada. At Rudy's, the meat is the main focus. A big pet peeve of mine is when a taco shop puts old guacamole in their burritos. There is nothing worse than taking a bite out of your burrito and seeing a greenish grey glob of old guacamole. Yuck. The guacamole here is made fresh everyday and is always a bright green. If you are really hungry and with a few friends I recommend ordering the carne asada fries. They are equally as good as the burrito and they make the fries extra crispy so they don't get all soggy while you eat them. If you want your mind blown by a carne asada burrito, go to Rudy's.

  • Karrlie O.

The best quacamole, tacos, burritos, salsa, beans, and the list goes on! After living down the street from Rudy's for over 3 years and eating there usually 2 times per week I didn't fully realize how much I would miss this place when we moved to Dallas. If you haven't you need to go and then you will become a regular yourself. What I really miss the most is the high quality, low price, and friendliness of this joint. We were regulars and treated wonderfully. Rudy even knew it was us when we called in our order without telling him our names. Every time we are in SB Rudy's is one of our first and last stops!

The food is good but the worst service you could possibly receive. Double check your food before you leave every time and don't expect an apology or politeness if they make mistakes. I would never encourage anyone to go to this business. It is very obvious they don't like serving you! There are better places and people to give your valuable business to! Good cooks, terrible management!

Unfortunately, some of what made Rudy's a staple in the community and the go-to place for the finest Mexican fare at a good price has gone away. I have heard Rudy no longer owns it, and it shows. The prices have jumped considerably and the food quality is not what it once was. Don't get me wrong, the food is still better than most Mexican places, but for anyone who frequents Rudy's, things have noticeably changed. It appears the corporate machine and/or need to increase profit margins has overshadowed one of the last great independent restaurants in the area. A gem, it still is, just with not the luster it once had.

  • Listen S.

A convenience store that also serves Mexican food and even has a couple tables. Brilliant! Great for an inexpensive, tasty meal just before a show at the Belly Up. The first time we went when we ordered "the carne asada plate" somehow we got "carne asada fries" instead, but in both instances the carne asada was very good. Extra points for the funny/sarcastic handwritten signs around the place.

  • Alan S.

When I came back for a sit down lunch Rudy's became more apparent to me. I haven't been in such a long time and apparently termites and flies were flying all over the place. The service was fast but the quality just seemed to go down a couple of stars. And yes the meat was salty.

    (3)
  • Chris R.

Consistently great california and carne asada burritos at rudys. I'll admit the carne asada is a bit on the dry side, but I'm not a picky eater and that won't stop me from coming back again and again. Plus, I love the mild salsa (not hot sauce) in a bottle that they hand you with your meal.

I've been coming here for a while now when I discovered it in college. It is a bit north and in the middle of a business park, inside a small plaza with several other restaurants. The only thing I have tried here is their Carne Asada burrito which was introduced to my by a friend. Their Carne Asada is made of good and meaty cuts of steak and marinated well. Their burrito also includes guacamole and salsa fresco, but I ask them to not add it. Even without the salsa fresco, the burrito is not dry at all and full of flavor. I have noticed their Carne Asada is on the saltier side sometimes, but usually it's fine for me. Their burrito is also reasonably priced at $5.50 (including the guac)! Also, they have horchata there too! It is, however, super sweet but at least they come in super large cups. I think their machine is broken because their mix to water ratio is whack, but I am not complaining. This place has decent parking and there's also street parking. They ow have a larger indoor seating area (and smaller market area now) as well as an outdoor patio. They also have text to order which is pretty useful if you're in a hurry. I noticed today that this place also has some more meat delicacies like cabeza and lengua, so I will hopefully get to try them soon.

This place is really good. I rated it a 3 though because it isn't the cleanest place, you never know what you'll be charged, and service is hit or miss. Also, not good for vegetarians. However, if you like street tacos and you are in the area...fast and delicious!

  • Aimee M.

This place was so good. You can't travel to SD without hitting up a taco shop! I would go back here for the carne asada burrito. My boyfriend ordered the chicken chimichanga and carne asada fries. Both were just as good! The fries alone are a meal in itself.

Discovered this place because it's within short walking distance of my old job. Pretty standard taco shop; service people are nice and prices are good. I really like their chorizo burrito (enough to crave it). All of their breakfast burritos are pretty good, actually. I'm not particularly wow-ed by their carne asada, but it's decent. Skip on the rolled tacos and California burrito. I may not drive out of my way to eat here, but they definitely deserve 4 stars. I highly recommend Rudy's if you're in the neighborhood.

You're in the right place if you are looking for the best California burrito you've ever had. The carne asada is marinated so well that it pretty much melts in your mouth! I live in LA but every time I'm in San Diego I have to make a pit stop at Rudy's to get my fix. This is the only place you need for Mexican food desires!

I'm not much of a meat eater but Rudy's carne asada is pretty bomb. I've always wondered how a little hole in the wall, tj-ish taco shop/market with futbol on the tv screens, ended up in Solana Beach and was told this area used to be a barrio. All I gotta say is Yum

  • Lauren A.

Who knew you could find legit Mexican food in Solana beach? This place is awesome. My boyfriend is pretty critical of good Mexican food, but he said this was the best al pastor he's had, even better than his go to spot. I highly recommend it.

    (5)
  • Becky R.

Absolutely delicious carne asada tacos. Andy tried the chile relleno burrito and said it was super good. My friend Lauren tried the breakfast burrito and L-O-V-E-D it, and she is a tough critic. This couple next to us got an order of carne asada fries - each. I'm not sure if I was more impressed by how amazing the fries looked or by the fact that they each polished off an entire order with none to spare. I can't say I've tried them, but clearly Rudy's does carne asada fries right. I would have never found this place if it weren't for hearing about it from a friend, though. Definitely out of the way and a bit hidden. I also wish they had better hours - then again, I'd probably go every night if they were open late, and we just can't be having that.

  • Sarah W.

I had some catering from Rudy's recently and was totally impressed! I recommend the mini beef tacos and the potato or beef rolled tacos. The chicken didn't blow me away as much as the potato and beef stuff did. Guacamole was really good, but it was the salsas that really knocked my socks off. I went back for seconds!

Ehhhh. I think it's overrated. What I had: mexican street tacos and I also tried the al pastor torta. I had some tacos in Mexico recently so this is what I'm comparing it to. It just seemed like it had a bunch of juice outside the meat instead of inside, meaning it was more like a wet taco. The al pastor wasn't even cut into chunks, it was like pulled pork. Definitely not authentic.

The Yelp reviews on the carne asada made me nervous: Inconsistent carne asada. Anyways, I ordered it and held my breath..... (Holding breath) (No, not because it was stinky [I just chomped on some Altoids, which I always keep in my car])... EXHALE (YES, LIKE WHITNEY HOUSTON). WHEW. BANG BOOM BANG. Wow, this is a pretty decent carne asada burrito especially for North County. Anyways, tasty carne asada that was a bit on the salty side. The al pastor street taco wasn't good. The al pastor was very mushy (maybe sitting in some warming tray?). This is smaller than your typical street taco. For $1.50, it wasn't a good deal. I would need about seven of these. I ate this while driving and only took me two bites. There is a tienda inside. I bought some flour tortillas (to make tacos at home) and some sour cream. Also, plenty of phone cards in stock...

Buddy of mine lived here for a few years and showed me this place and now I'm hooked! One of the best carne asada burritos I've ever had! I can't wait to go back to have it again soon! Not only for the taste but to make him really jealous that I'm eating at Rudy's since he has recently relocated to Los Angeles. HAHA

I am not completely familiar with Mexican food in San Diego, because I have only visited a few times. But I am well aware that there are higher standards for Mexican food in this lovely county. SO, on the LA/OC scale for mexican food, this place would easily be a 5, considering their fresh food, quick service, cheap prices, and excellent options (tortas, quesos, burros, etc.) On the SD scale, however, I would rate this place a solid 4 as their food is fresh and epic, but I was able to finish my food in one sitting which means they didn't overflow it with heaping portions, as one might expect from the 5-star places. I ordered their Cali burrito with Chicken, and was happy to confirm that it was all white meat, shredded, and marinated to excellence. The burrito was delightful, and I would order it again and again if I lived closer to Rudy's! Side note: Their salsa is on the spicier side, but it is oh-so-fresh and adds to the already flavorful meal. If you are in the area, hit this place up! ADIOS!

Tried it based on Yelp reviews. But I agree with Stephanie. Carne Asada was not good - it was dry and it was completely flavorless. The girl taking the order was rude and between bad food and bad service there's no need to give this place a second chance.

  • Lo S.

Not too impressed and cannot figure out how it gets as many stars as it does. Maybe I am ordering the wrong things. The carne asada burrito meat was overcooked and fatty which made it hard to eat. The guacamole is way to spicy to be enjoyed because the avocado is overpowered. The carnitas burrito and carnitas taco are very good. The chicken crispy taco was not to my taste because of the saucy chicken. Chips are very good and the salsa is spicy hot, but enjoyable in small amounts. We ordered a chicken tamale to share which was by far the best thing I have had here, but took a long time to prepare. If you want some authentic, but less spicy food then try Don Chuy's on Valley Ave down the street. It is a sit down restaurant, but they do takeout and have bar seating if you want to eat in. Their food is flavorful and not over spiced. I keep going back to Rudy's because my mom likes the carnitas burritos and sometimes Don Chuy's is closed when I am in the area, but it is not my first or second or even third choice for Mexican food.

Just go. They are great! Carnitas Burritos are my favorite! Kids like Bean & Cheese. Excellent Salsa to boot!

Some of the best street tacos in all of San Diego. I've eaten here many times and been impressed ever time. Get the al pastor street tacos and you'll be coming back again. And while I avoid carne asada most places, Rudy's does it right.

Best Carne Asada Burrito in San Diego. Hands down.

  • Mark W.

Carne Asada is the thing to get here. It is not like most places where there are little chunks of meat that have had the hell cooked out of it.Rudy makes the carne asada in strips and you can tell that it is cooked to order versus burnt on a flat top. This pretty much a take out place with a little seating inside and some seating on a patio.

    (4)
  • Jake V.

Not bad carne asada fries. This is all I had but they were good. I'd come back and try other things on the menu.

  • Arnel D.

Easy to get to and isn't too far from the race track. They have handmade tortillas and chips and really delicious carne asada. There's a bar a small dining area inside and a patio outside with a new fence. Service is slow when busy but worth the wait. Give this place a try when in the area. You can thank me later.

Rudy's taco shop?? Should be called- was sold to a gringo who changed everything, nickel and dimes you on every order, and went cheap to make a buck. It's the red headed stepchild of Eden Gardens-embarrassing. My credentials? What you call "Mexican food" I just call food. All 270lbs of me eats the stuff most days of the week. I know the difference between all the different regions of SD. Nothing's better then TJ style fish tacos in south bay, but I've digressed... Rudy's food, is no longer the best quality, it is not cooked with pride or love. It's smaller servings size is noticeable. They have rode too long on the glory that was the "old Rudy's" when Rudy owned it. I guess that's what you have to do as an owner to pay for those over priced craft beer taps you put in. Save your $$$ and drive to Encinitas...

Grilled shrimp taco was amazing!! So was the avocado salsa. I also ordered a crispy fish taco, and I would recommend skipping that. We visited Sunday for lunch, and despite how busy it was, the line to order moved quickly and our tacos and burritos were ready very fast. I would come here again!

Wow, amazing fresh Baja shrimp & fish tacos! Hole in the wall place, fresh tacos made when you order, huge portions and taste fantastic. Friendly staff as well. Found this place on Yelp. Good eats! Will definitely be back.

  • Margaret A.

Upon entering, it looks like part of the dining area is also a small grocery store and a western union booth behind really thick glass. Ordered the chicken rolled tacos, that came with plenty of guacamole! The chicken was moist and had a nice mild red chile spice flavor. The tortilla was lightly crisp and cooked just right. The fresh guacamole is delicious along with the combination of diced tomato and lettuce topping the whole thing off! Definitely will be coming back for more tacos!

I got a breakfast burrito with just potatoes, egg, and cheese (no meat). The burrito was probably 70% potato, 20% egg, and 10% cheese. So obviously way off. The potatoes also tasted very fried which I wasn't expecting. I would've definitely liked more cheese. They do give you a heaping side of sour cream (for an extra cost but a larger cup than I'm used to getting). The salsa was very good. I guess you get what you pay for. I probably won't order the burrito again but I'll give it another try.

Very good food! The buttered shrimps are my favorite, the food is amazingly good. They only thing that I didn't like was the mess around The counter where the napkins and forks are...

    (4)
  • Jerry T.

I hope the food is better than the service from the girl at the counter. As little personality as possible and doesn't even look at you at all. I asked what the difference between Baja style and grilled style fish and she answered like I was stupid for asking. Am I the only one that doesn't know what Baja style is?

  • Diana W.

We discovered this place last year thanks to Yelp--we loved it so much we had to come again this year! California burrito is delicious--family favorite for sure. This time I tried the Baja fish taco and the grilled taco--I made it a combo for and additional $1.99. My favorite was the Baja fish taco, grilled taco tasted a bit fishy but still good flavor. Love this place service was friendly and FAST!

Okay, we were not expecting the surf-and-turf quesadilla to be this amazing! Breakfasts here are a must. Delicious machaca breakfast burritos! Worth it for the tasty tortillas and savory salsas!

  • Skylar S.

Maybe it's the fact I live in Maryland, and never get good tacos, or maybe these are the best tacos that have ever been made. I'm thinking that these were the best tacos ever. Salsa great, and spicy. Taco meat(carnitas, and carne asada) were seasoned perfectly, and were awesome. I had six, but could have easily choked down 15.

  • Erin L.

There are so many Mexican joints around this town, and I gotta say, their shrimp tacos were one of the best I've had. Ok, they're not TJs Oyster good, but they're pretty good! I also had the fish tacos, and I wasn't overly impressed. Pros: they have their own salsa bar with salsa CALIENTE. Spicy!

    (4)
  • Natalie H.

Hands down best tacos you're going to find anywhere.... Unless you're in Mexico. These are true authentic Mexican street tacos. I got the carne asada and pounded five of them in about two minutes. If you want a true Mexican experience, you must eat here. The owner is from Guadalajara, Mexico and very friendly. The restaurant is not fancy and I actually felt like I was in a small taco shop in Mexico, which made the experience all the better.

  • Casey B.

What happened to the Carne asada? It used to be the best in town no question. We had Rudy's cater several events and ate there regularly. At some point after second location opened in la costa they changed the meat. Still good flavor but the meat is no longer outstanding. Not sure what happened, but if it was a cost thing, I would pay double for the old burrito, but the new version doesn't even warrant a visit. It's now same as the average taco shop, so now we've been going to the average taco shop down the street from our house. Bummed.

I was visiting Del Mar on Memorial Day weekend for the CrossFit regional games and was here for the whole weekend. My friends and me were craving Mexican food one evening and we found Rudys Tacos and fucking hell, this place is off the hook. It's a hole in the wall joint which is also a money sending place to Mexico lol. I ordered the al pastor burrito with a Pacifico draft beer and it was the best burrito I have had in a really long time. I would really recommend this to anyone and everyone.

  • kathy p.

Wowza. I ordered the carnitas burrito wet style! Incredible and could easily feed a family of four. It was stuffed with tender and flavorful carnitas, pico de gallo, and guacamole! The place is small and has some outside seating.

  • Nicole B.

Amazing hidden gem! The absolute best breakfast burritos around! You must get them with chorizo added...not greasy like you would imagine! Another awesome feature is they have text to order! We text our order in, swing by and pay and pick them up and then on our way to work or the next activity for the day! Recently changed fheir setup to include tap beer and are always playing a soccer game! Love this place!

I've been on the hunt for the best California Burrito in all of Socal. Rudy's unfortunately doesn't bode well against the competition. Definitely a hole in the wall, it shares the storefront with a small convenience store. It's a bit of a mess inside. Thankfully they have an outdoor patio area - otherwise it's take-out for me. The California burrito itself was mediocre. The steak, though cooked medium, was chewy and borderline room temp. Afterwards my jaw hurt, like I had been chewing 5 packs of big-league chew for an hour. Not a bad Mexican joint and possibly one of the go-to's in Solana beach , but compared to Roberto's, Lolitas, and the like it just cannot compare.

DONT even bother going to this place!!! It is beyond GROSS!! I ordered the Super carne asada fries.. & what I got was the Mini carne asada fries. The portion is ridiculously SMALL! they spread everything out to make it seem like the container is full but ITS NOT! I counted my pieces of disgusting RUBBER meat & I got 6 little pieces of not well cooked meat!! This is the ABSOLUTE WORST taco shop EVER!!!!!!! I gaged after my first bite & threw away my food, I couldn't even take a second bite! NEVER EVER EVER GOING BACk! I don't understand how this place is open & serving auch shitty food.

Just did a remodel and things are looking a little spiffy in here! Also has a newly expanded menu and takeaway containers of fresh yumminess. Has been upgraded to our default Mexican eatery! This place is always slammed, even right before closing, although do be aware that their kitchen closes 15 mins before close. TV always has soccer on, salsa bar is pretty stellar, and their burritos are quite excellent. Will be going here for years to come!

    (4)
  • Mariah M.

Delicious! Carne Asada fries were the bomb and I will definitely be returning. The fries were crispy and not soggy, I would say they were shoe string fries and they held up really well with all of the toppings.

  • Joe C.

Good fast Mexican food, but would be nicer if they had later hours than 8pm most nights. As a pseudo carne asada aficionado, I'd say theirs is OK. Want the best carne, go to the Brigantine. I really like the pollo asada as a lighter alternative. I wish Rudy's and all fast food mexican restaurants would stopped using so much styrofoam. I order a quesadilla to go, it comes in a giant foam to-go container. I eat in, and they put it on a styrofoam plate. My burrito comes on a paper plate. Why cant they put 2 items on 1 paper plate? If I bring in my own container or plate, they will just get confused. Do any take out places understand the quandary of using styrofoam? Must I only order burritos because they come in a thin paper wrapping?

  • Kay L.

Don't let the name fool you. This place is pretty authentic, located inside a mexican convenient store. I called ahead to order 4 carne asada burritos, 1 california and 1 carne asada breakfast burrito and it was ready when I arrived and I was out of there in last than 1 minute. I came on a monday night at 8 and there was plenty of parking. My friend had the California burrito and he really loved it. The carne asada burrito was bomb as well. The meat was very tender. They have a salsa bar.

  • Jo C.

Classically whole in the wall-e except for it sits in Solana beach. Burritos are great and beer sales are convenient. I never intend to be Rude-y but this place would earn the extra star for longer hours. Too many times have I wanted a burrito and beer at 10 and the shop does not oblige.

After reading that this place makes the best carne asada burrito in San Diego, I stopped by with great anticipation and was majorly let down. Maybe it was just an off day, but the meat was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't even eat half the burrito, and am honestly surprised I didn't get sick. Really foul or spoiled or something. Absolutely dreadful.

Have loved this place for many years. They re decorated and organized the inside which has more seating and is set up to actually eat there now. The street tacos are a favorite of mine, they have fabulous breakfast burritos and fantastically hot salsa options. Small lot to park in but rarely do you have to park on the street. They make menudo and have everything you could ask for in a Mexican place. Soda fountain, they do charge extra for carrots and peppers, sour cream and avocado/quac. Juts a great authentic, not too expensive old school family run place to grab a great breakfast burrito or lunch!

  • M M.

Rudy's is what Southern Californian mexican food is all about. This place is good for breakfast, lunch and dinner and SO authentic! I will say, the food is a little too salty (so you've been warned) but when I have a craving for mexican food this is the only place to go. The absolute best thing about Rudy's though is that you can order a few pounds of carne asada to grill at home -- best BBQ secret ever. *** Note I didn't know the change of ownership happened! Was that recent? At any rate, my review is from when I lived there a month or two ago.

  • Red A.

The tacos/burritos here are so damn good you have to be careful not to eat your fingers. Really, very authentic Mexican food with a great kick. And it's CHEAP. Get the fish tacos!! Minus 1 star for an erratic atmosphere and unfriendly staff. The food is beyond expectations, so go here for that alone!

  • Claire C.

I used to love coming to Rudy's but this past year under new ownership I've seen it changing. At first it wasn't so bad, a new soda machine & television and more seating with a slight price hike. But then the prices were raised again, egg shells started showing up in my breakfast burritos (that was the last straw) and cheesy promotional signs for happy hours, taco tuesdays and all sorts of other things that were unnecessary before. I'm sad to say but I'll have to find a new go to mexican restaurant for lunch (I used to frequent 2-3x a week!). Miss you Rudy.

  • Skip C.

Seriously, seriously great Mexican food. It appears that the meats are cooked when you place your order. Not that morning. TRUST ME! Order the Vampiro. Two fresh tortillas with melted white Mexican cheese. Then, freshly grilled marinated flank steak and grilled marinated shrimp, all topped with fresh guacamole and fresh salsa fresca. Seriously, what could be better? I text my order in and it's always ready when I get there. Text to (858) 353-5883. Side note: Their other Rudy's at La Costa Blvd and El Camino Real is still worthy of 5 stars because of the freshly cooked meats, but the menu is slightly different (no Vampiro) and the snotty attitude of the cashiers is often troubling.

Just returned to Rudy's after a long hiatus. Recently, my wife and I have been craving Mexican, and we've been nurturing it at Lolita"s Taco Shop. What brought us back to Rudy's? We had a kid's birthday party to attend and believe it or not, Rudy's catered the event. Unfortunately, the food at the event was sitting out and the meat was super dry and overcooked. We chalked the bad food up to the fact that it was sitting idle in chaffing trays and exposed to the elements. Coming home from Encinitas yesterday, we made a quick stop by Rudy's and shared a carne asada burrito-a mainstay; a go-to item on their menu. The result? Super salty, dry meat, but a good tortilla. The inside of the restaurant seemed re-modeled...I wonder if the place changed ownership.

  • Will L.

I was very disappointed in this place after seeing some positive reviews. The baja fish taco batter was coarse and clumpy. Same with the baja shrimp tacos. The grilled fish tacos were OK but not great. The hand made tortillas were uninspiring. To top it off the cashier lady had a real attitude, and did not give me any salsa (I wasn't aware of any salsa bar) with my to-go order. Only thing good about the place was the all you can drink Orange Bang. I'd rather have Rubio's.

After five years of breakfast burritos in the morning and burritos pastore in the afternoon, I had to upgrade my review to a perfect five stars. They remodeled. They made the menu larger than it was five years ago (fish and shrimp tacos and burritos). They installed a whole to go case for the salsas and guacamole. Rudy's is perfect. Rudy's is....PERFECT

  • Amy V.

What happened to this Rudy's?! I got a breakfast burrito but got nothing but cheese. I couldn't taste the eggs or see it. The bacon are paper thin with a smokey taste. Definitely disappointed. The red salsa used to be my favorite now it's a disappointment. At least their green salsa is decent. Not sure if I will return. This used to be my breakfast burrito spot but now I'm on a search.

Quality of food gone down hill and up the old dirt road This shark feels like they don't like white sharks there (customer service needs introduction to customer service) The seasoning on the carne asada was the main reason for the visits Last california burrito fries were old and about 80% of burrito, carne asada was old and dry They recently renovated and the missus shark slipped on the over polished floor. She's ok but her fins were bruised. Not happy Salsa is Spanish for sauce, so in America I believe both terms are interchangeable Won't be back Kiss my claspers

Awesome Carne Asada Fries! Who knew there would be an authentic Mexican food restaurant in Solana Beach. Four of us ate breakfast burritos for $25. The tortillas alone are worth the trip. It was AM so the patio was in the shade...nice. If you want pretentious, you won't find it here. If you want great Mexican food, you won't find better.

  • Louis D.

Ordered two fish tacos, two street tacos, a chicken enchilada, and a cup of horchata between two people. The food was delicious. The fish was a little mushy in the middle, but I'll forgive them because the tacos were $3 and otherwise a slam dunk. The enchilada sauce is a thicker darker sauce with a smoky flavor. Very tasty. And the street tacos were good as well. If you are looking for gourmet Mexican food this probably isn't for you, but if you want a cheap delicious taco shop come here.

  • Sean C.

Sucked. Food was NOT very good. Meat in my street taco was hard and not very flavorful. There are tons of reviews that claim this is the best carne asada ever... My wife had the carne asada burrito and said it was average at best The yelp reviews here claiming how great this place is are FAKE!!

Yuuuummm! LOVES! I came here last Friday night. It's a cool setup - half convenience store/ half taco shop/meat deli. Lot of things going on here. I had the carnitas street taco and carne asada street taco with rice and beans - everything was DELICIOUS and fresh. Plus they had Mexican coke - score! My friend ordered a chicken burrito and they forgot the chicken - she didn't realize until she had a few bites and they made her another one super quickly. The outside patio is cool but some of the tables are kind of trashed--one was missing pieces and it was made of stone. But aesthetics aren't really why anyone goes to a taco shop. I would absolutely come here again if I'm in the area.

I don't even like Carna asada, but all the reviews said THEY HAVE THE BEST! So, I listened to YELP, tried the carna asada & really liked it! The guacamole was as everyone said, real, thick & chunky! With home made fresh tortilla chips. The chicken Calif burrito had way 2 much sour cream , (ASK FOR EASY on the SC), lots of chicken, FF were mushy(not the way I like it). Overall, very good food & experience. Highly recommended stop.

What we ordered: - Carne asada fries: 2.5 stars. The carne asada was dry and tasted old. - menudo: 4 stars - no hominy in this menudo so minus one star. Available weekends only. - carne asada burrito: 4 stars DROOL worthy. - chile relleno burrito: 3 stars, A-OK. Not mind blowing was tasty. Service was friendly. I suggest calling in an order ahead of time. They have an extensive menu, it was so hard to choose but I just went with what they seemed to be famous for. IDK why the carne asada in the burrito was so juicy and delicious but the steak in the fries was so dry and chewy...maybe we got the last of a batch that had been sitting out. Even so, rudy's is a must try in Solana beach. They have great food at very reasonable prices. Also highly recommend the green tomatillo salsa. It was so good!

  • Lauren D.

I got the grilled fish tacos and I devoured them. Fresh tortilla and grilled fish to order. I dare say, it's healthy. Loaded up on the black salsa, as well as the orange and green. I know I sound ignorant when calling them by their color and not avocado or habanero but I'm not 100% certain (especially on the black). I want to eat another 2.

One of my absolute favorite Mexican food spots in all of San Diego. I live in San Diego proper but I make a point to stop at Rudy's any time I'm passing by on the 5. In my opinion, their carne asada meat is the best in the county. I don't usually mess around too much when I go here: California burrito, no sour cream (I just don't like sour cream). Sometimes I'll throw in some guacamole. And every time I'll slather it in one of the best red salsa's to ever grace my taste buds, a perfectly spicy match for the amazing carne asada beef i their burritos. The fries are also perfectly cooked, which can sometimes cripple Cali burritos at lesser places, but Rudy's is the whole package. I've been coming to the place awhile now--originally stopped by on a whim after picking up a friend from Solana Beach train station. Back then, Rudy's was more of a Mexican market than a burrito joint with seating limited to a couple of plastic tables outside. Now, the market section is almost gone and seating has been expanded dramatically--a testament to the great quality of the food. Glad to see this place blowing up, I'll always get my burrito fix from here anytime I'm close!

Great surprise in Solana Beach. We were craving good tacos while in Del Mar and saw Yelp recommended this spot. What an awesome place! Real Mexican street tacos. All of them were great but the Al Pastor tacos are one of the best tacos I had in SD. Will be going back, that's for sure!

I am fairly certain Rudy's is under new ownership :( and unfortunately has gone downhill. Portions are HALF what they used to be. My little hand actually fits around the cali burrito now. BUMMED because this place is around the corner from my office and it was my go-to place for an always satisfying burrito and perfect hot salsa. The salsa remains, but the kitchen has got to step it up in order to maintain the original Rudy's regulars.

  • Liza X.

Got the carne asada burrito... It was alright. Nothing too special and kind of small. The meat had some decent seasoning but was a bit dry for my taste and there was only a bit of Guac and beans. The tortilla was practically the dominant feature for most of the time while I was eating. For $5.99 + tax you can probably get better elsewhere.

Under new management and it shows, horribly!! Decided to try this place after finding it on yelp while driving from LA to San Diego. If I was reviewing food alone, I'd go for 4 stars. But the service was HORRIBLE! THey are apparently remodeling, so the place is mess. We took awhile to look over the menu and finally decided. We ordered food for a family of 4 and the total was $50!! When asking the girl who was helping me questions she continually rolled her eyes and looked like I was annoying her. When I looked at the receipt she had put a burrito instead of a taco. She took the reciept, took about 5 minutes to give me back the difference and never even said anything let alone apologized. Upon looking closer the prices we were charged were higher for a few other items. I again asked why and she said that they are under new ownership and the prices have changed. I mentioned the lengua taco said 1.69 and she charged 2.99. She said " you said taco not street taco." We ordered mexican drinks that were supposed to come out of a machine that was out of everything, and no one could be bothered to fill it. The food was good/great and the portions are pretty large, 2 tacos is plenty for an adult. The carne asada torta was delish! But, I will not go back or recommend anyone based on the service.

Asada was salty and barely edible. . The chimichanga had a sweet unusual after taste like cinnamon sugar. The young lady who took our order was looked miserable and wasn't very welcoming. Her attitude was dog shit

I called in an order and when I showed up, the only person in the store at the time, two women working stared at me for a minute while looking back at each other before finally asking what I wanted. Meanwhile, there's two bags on the counter full of burritos that I assumed weren't for me. I told them my order and paid for it. 10 minutes later someone asks for their food and only then did she realize the food that was on the counter for 15 minutes was my food and pretended it has just finished. Food was fine but customer service abysmal.

I really wanted to like this place, but it wasn't that good. The servings were large but the flavors just weren't that great. The el pastor taco was ok. I'd say a 3 star and the vampiro taco with shrimp and carne asada was pretty flavorless. The carne asada was too plain and just tasted like meat. It had that blah meat flavor. I don't know how to explain it, but it was just meaty and bland. They added cheese to the taco and for the calories it was like it needed more sauce or something. The cheese didn't really add much. I was just unimpressed.

Wow, an amazing place for a burrito in Solana Beach. The carne asada burrito was perfect in every way and a good measure of how good a carne asada burrito is the quality of the carne asada and it had to be one of the tastiest carne asadas I've had in a burrito. Really tender and well seasoned meat. They also have fresh corn tortillas and I took a few home with me on my flight back to the Bay Area. I know where I'm coming back for a burrito next time I'm in San Diego.

Ordered couple of chicken burritos and fajita. Taste was good and quantity was pretty good. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

We stumbled upon Rudy's en route to the train station in Solana Beach thanks to yelp. I'm a Mex food addict and I seriously couldn't find a flaw in what we were served at Rudy's humble little grocery store/restaurant. The tacos de lengua were so good! Charred, tender meat, fresh made corn tortillas, and just the right amount of chopped onion and cilantro made these simple and delicious tacos something to remember. The carne asada burrito was even better. And the salsa bar offered a great selection of mild to spicy (but not super spicy) options. I chose them all. Everything was super fresh and really authentic. They even had a great selection of local craft and well known draft beers to help wash it all down. Definitely worth going out of your way for!

Authentic, made with love. Real Mexican food made by Mexicans. They make their own tortillas there which are delicious. I love that it's part of a grocery store too. Feels like Mexico.

Me and my cousins ordered the California burrito. The meat was salty and there was too much sour cream. We left disappointed.

Fresh made corn tortillas. :) shrimp tacos were the best. Then fish tacos. Carne Asada burrito was a Lil too salty and not to my taste. Surf burrito was next best and then fish burrito. Much more Americanized flavor. Nice outdoor seating.

It's pretty legit mexican but I'd have to say that the veggie burrito wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I was super stoked that it had guac in it though. Specify if you want refried beans in it though because it does not come with it!! (Which is insane to me!!!) Veggie burrito give up the beans. It was pretty legit though plus we got to watch soccer while we ate....also there nachos...AMAZEBALLS

My coworkers always talk about this place. They obviously don't know what a good taco shop is. And apparently neither do my fellow yelpers. Lol Came in around 6 pm tonight. Quite a few people inside. The younger girl in the front had a real starring problem. I felt uncomfortable right when I walked In because of that. It was a "who are you and what are you doing here" look. I didn't appreciate that. Ordered a California burrito. About 6 minutes later my food was ready. First thought, "damn? Smallest burrito ever". But no big deal if it's delicious. It sure wasn't! Way too greasy. Meat looked & tasted funny. Way too chewy. They obviously use really cheap meat. Ewww gross. They were really big pieces too. :-/ Tortilla was good but became cold quickly because of the sour cream. This is probably the only place that doesn't use guacamole in their cali burrito. Probably because they're cheap. Lol I only came here for convenience & because I wanted to try it out. And I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because I will come back & give them another shot but I definitely will be ordering something else. Maybe rolled tacos....

Love these tacos and burritos. Recently tried the shrimp tacos and was very happy. They recently made the seating nicer.

I was told by Yelpers and friends that i must go and try their famous carne asada burrito, so i did. I can agree with others that the quality of meat is better, nice size strips of meat but to be honest all i could taste was salt. The meat was so heavily salted, i couldn't enjoy the burrito at all. I took a few bites and put it down, drank a gallon of water when i got home. Don't get me wrong, i like to add salt when i cook, but this was an overkill. The menu is very limited, just chicken or beef choices. sorry.. no me gusta

One of the best California burritos in Solana Beach and probably the best tortillas at a taco shop. They've done a great job with the remodel and I still see familiar faces among the employees that work there.

Hidden gem. Tight parking lot, but well worth the maneuvering. To order, go inside the convenience store. Then you take your number and go out back to the patio. They will call your number thru a little pass-through window. The convenience store has a lot of authentic Mexican snacks and drinks, so be sure to look around. On the menu - burritos, street tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas. Lots of different meat and seafood options, plus a great vegetarian burrito that I always order. The prices are great. A burrito costs about $6. When we have out of town guests, we hit this place up before heading to Cedros Avenue. Bonus: the patio is dog-friendly.

5 stars for their grilled shrimp burritos. I haven't tried anything else here. This is my favorite shrimp burrito (just shrimp) in San Diego. I'm amazed out how fresh their shrimp is and how good their sauce (that comes inside the burrito) is. Note: for a shrimp and bean burrito (shrimp with fixin's) go to Kotija (see my other review). This is a line-up place where you eat inside or outside. Nothing fancy, and don't expect the staff to be helpful or patient.

    (5)
  • Sakya T.

The tacos were really good. I tried the beer battered one and that was pretty nice. They don't have a lot of tables to dine in. The service was decent. Perfect for a quick lunch.

    (4)
  • Matt D.

Totally mediocre. Had the fish tacos. Just not that great. Not rotten or awful, had I been starving they likely would have tasted like manna from heaven. But short of that, I don't think I'd go back. Plus, the wait was too long to order for a little taco shop in a convenience store, not to mention waiting for my food. Again, no real problem, and not to be scoffed at if there were no other options, but it's Solana Beach and there are restaurants everywhere. Chef Ramsey would turn this place upside down and probably make it a great taco stand.

  • Allison G.

The carne asada is unlike any I've had in San Diego! It tastes like it's slow roasted for hours (not sure if it actually is), and falls apart in your mouth! Your best bet is a California burrito, because, you are in San Diego after all! Carne asada, french fries, pico de gallo, cheese, guacamole, sour cream - heaven. The salsa bar offers up some great options - all of which are extremely spicy so be careful if you're not into the heat!

Thanks to my friend for taking me to this awesome Taco place. The food is delicious with a capital D. I had three a la carte tacos..carnitas was soft, perfectly seasoned. The fish tacos were pretty good too..interesting batter.

Sorry but this place is gross. You Yelpers are nutty. I'm all for authentic hole in the wall Mexican but the place felt dirty. (liquor store/lotto ticket/restaurant combo...yuck). The carne asada was disgusting. I couldn't finish my taco. Burrito was bland. Honestly the whole experience made me fear food poisoning. Pass.

  • Max D.

Been here a few times. Burritos are filling and tasty. Similar to all the other burrito shops in San Diego. I haven't explored the menu enough to know if they make one item especially well. However, I have never left disappointed. Good food. Good environment.

Food sex every time I come here. Probably my favorite burrito place in SD period. I crave it and regularly brave horrible traffic to come here, although if I lived any closer I would probably be 300 pounds heavier and fluent in spanish. I'm thinking about California Burritos and I just wanna talk about Rudy's again, so what? Cinco Stars

  • Ryan And Jade T.

Rudy's is near and dear to me; I work right down the street from it and I'm hooked. I'll very often call in on the way to work and pre-order a breakfast burrito, and for lunch I get mostly veggie burritos (perfect), the crispy beef tacos or carne asada burritos. The salsa is great too, not the liquidy tomato-and-vinegar concoction most places give you in those little tubs that don't do much but burn holes in your palate. There's actual flavor in it! Regarding the authenticity, It says something that from 11am to 7pm, any and all mexicans in the area can all be found eating and wiring money to various locations. And the owners are so nice, I tried to buy one of their shirts but they just gave it to me as long as I wore it around town, and I'm happy to! Totally recommend this place! This is for the Solana Beach location, I'm sure their new La Costa location will thrive as well.

I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm not the biggest Mexican food fan. I know, that's some kind of blasphemy living in San Diego, but I'm from Hawaii and the only Mexican food there is Taco Bell. Okay, back to Rudy's. This place is AWESOME. It's right across the street from my office, and one day I forgot my lunch so I thought I'd pop over to check it out. One of my co-workers suggested she and I split a carne asada burritto, and since I couldn't think of something else I wanted to eat, I agreed. WOW. Seriously. WOW!!! The carne asada is so savory and delicious! Chopped into little pieces and slathered with guacamole and cheese...mmmm...heavenly. And this morning I (was feeling a little hung over) decided to check out their breakfast burritto. Again, I wasn't disappointed! Cheese, bacon, egg and tater tots and wrapped up together in a light tortilla. For someone like me, who really could never eat mexican ever and not mind, to actually ENJOY a burritto is a big deal. This place is awesome, the prices are so low and the service is quick. Two thumbs way up!

Every SD local has his or her favorite place to get their burrito fix. After the decline of Santana's (nka Fresh MXN - seriously.), I've been itching for some delicious California Burrito. After being introduced to this place, I'm hooked. I went in once and loved my breakfast burrito that I figured it was a fluke and must be on some high after not having a breakfast burrito in so long. Went in a second time, totally sold on this place. Got a breakfast burrito and sampled a California burrito...de-li-cious. The steak was cooked perfectly and the flavor of the steak is good enough that I'm still thinking about it.

The "vegetarian" burrito isn't vegetarian the refried beans have lard and the rice has chicken broth. So being vegetarian I got a quesadilla and there was a small hair on it...

Currently eating a California burrito as I type this review. This thing is full of shredded beef, and I do mean that it has a lot! Additionally, it has some fries, cheese, and sour cream, all wrapped in a big flour tortilla. The meat was very tasty, juicy and tender. I will definitely eat this again! And it's a great deal for just over $5.00. There is also a market/liquor store here, and they have some raw meats and cheese. I'm stuffed, that was a big burrito!

This is a little mini-mart that also serves mexican fare. If you are an adventurous sort, try the Legua Burrito (beef tongue). Rudy's is by far the best one I've ever tasted. Their carne asada is fantastic, too. I've never had any breakfast burritos, though. This is not a good dining experience, but it is great for quick eating and outside eating, park style. Rudy and his staff are all really nice and love sharing their tasty food. They are great about giving samples to see what you like. I also recently used Rudy's for catering/pick-up. They were very helpful in figuring out what to order for my crowd. Since it was a surprise party, they were also cooperative about the communications needed to hide the surprise from my husband. They accommodated every request I made up to the date of the event and packed it all perfectly for transporting. When we got the food, it was exactly what I ordered and our guests loved the food, especially the birthday boy. I would definitely use them again for a casual party where Mexican food is appropriate. The food was truly fantastic!

  • P K.

This place is ok. Had carnitas burrito, carne asada taco & carnitas taco. Food is so so. Not bad, but I've had better. Their big plus is the value. The burrito was huge, and pretty much carnitas wrapped in tortilla. All that for $5-6 (can't remember for sure). Their tacos are also pretty filling, as you pretty much have a pile (if you've been to Bull Taco, think 2-3x the meat) of meat on double tortilla. So between my 3 North County taco stops, this wins in value, but loses in taste.

If you ever see a boat parked in the fire lane outside of Rudy's don't call the cops. It's just me and I'm probably drunk. (I'm not the one driving - M.A.D.D.) Rudy's is a staple in my diet. In fact, if I was to draw you my food pyramid right now I would put Rudy's California burrito down as the base layer. Key note: ORDER PLUS GUAC. I would give 5 stars if they put guacamole in their Cali burro but they don't. Best Guacamole in town! I don't know what they do to the carne asada but it's the best I have ever had. Have you ever gone to one of these ----erto's and sworn the little, diced, brown cubes weren't even beef? I hate that. That's why I go to Rudy's for all my carne asada and carne asada needs. P.S. I'm a firm believer that a Mexican food joint is not legit unless it has money wiring/check cashing facility in the store.

Well...there you have it folks...if you want CARNE ASADA well then you must go to this place. Seriously...best quality in town. I tried the Veggie burrito too which was fine but man why get that...no thank you. ONE POUND of in your face food. You def. want to have an appetite or save some for the next day - what i did. Reheat and there you go another meaty treat! My recommendation - if you are taking the coaster pick it up and watch the beaches...thinking this is the LIFE

I feel a bit weird reviewing Rudy's now, a full *two years* since the last time I ate there. But looking over the most recent ten or so reviews, it's clear this is still one of the best places to get a burrito...period. (I.e., not just in SD.) That perfectly grilled steak, chunky salsa, and tangy guac... Rice and beans--who needs all that filler? To me, trips back to SD are complete not after a meal at In-N-Out, but a ginormous carne asada at Rudy's. [A commentary on burrito styles in general--this is what I've observed: In SD, if you ask for a standard carne asada, and just that, you'll get a tortilla wrapped around just three ingredients--steak, salsa, guac. Anywhere else in the country you'll get a SF-style, with the rice, beans, etc. In the end it's a matter of taste... I like ours.] But let me just say, our SD burritos are intense, and if you mess up one ingredient, you're at a 75% (counting the tortilla)--a solid C; we don't curve grades when it comes to burritos in a city like San Diego. It doesn't matter, though, since Rudy's does all four right, including that wonderfully chewy, but not too moist tortilla, and for that I'm grateful. And my belly, satisfied.

Pretty consistently good mexican. Surprisnly to other reviewers, I prefer the carnitas over the carne asada. Even their bean&cheese is great. Tortas are huge. And gots to have the al pastor street tacos.

    (4)
  • Matthew L.

Yum, I think that summed it up. But if you must know more the carne asada burrito was fantastic, guacamole, a little pico de gallo, and steak tons of steak. P.S. the hot sauce they give you with it is fantastic so if you like spicy, load it on. OH and did I mention a burrito is only 4.50? Yeah

  • Jake B.

Know why I love this place? They keep it real. International phone cards line the walls. A rack of Bimbo breads stands next to the door. You can even buy coca-cola in a BOTTLE! Yes, a BOTTLE people...you won't find THAT at Taco Bell. But the best part? The carne-asada. They grill up classic strips of thin meat, which is to die for in their super quesadilla or california burrito. Whatever you order, even if it is just a coke, be sure get guac on it...you'll thank me!

After working down the street for almost a year and seeing this place every day, I decided to try it. Some of the best al pastor I've had. Burritos are pretty big and the service was great.

I was hungry for Mexican food and found this place using Yelp. When I first entered it looked like just a marketplace. I was hungry and still gave them a shot. Wow! I'm glad I did! This is the best Mexican food I've been to in San Diego. The staff is friendly. Their Carne asada plate or burrito is to die for! The best part about this place is that it's inexpensive for delicious food.

went to this place based upon yelp reviews, it is by the del mar race track, the service was great, rudy was super friendly, i ordered the california burrito and my friend got the carne asada burrito, my burrito was great, and i loved their verde sauce, my friend said the carne asada burrito was good as well. If you are in the area def check this place out.

Un real taco shop. The meat is so well prepared and cooked thouroughly. This is not a place where you are going to have a bunch of fatty nastiness in your burrito. I go here whenever I have to meet clients in the North County Beach area. During the week there is a lot of business being done on this small patio. Don't judge this book by the cover. They are the real deal. Take it from a heavy set, Native San Diegan burrito conesieur. This place is LEGIT. In fact, I'll be going here today. Thanks and have a great day.

BY FAR, the BEST carne asada burrito anywhere in San Diego. I have eaten alot of them at alot of different places, but this place definitely takes the prize.

On a dollar for dollar basis, Rudy's is hands down the best food value in Solana Beach. Very friendly place that gets good food out fast. Don't overlook the street tacos.

    (4)

From the flautas to the street tacos this place is amazing!! Great burritos for breakfast lunch or dinner. Rudy and his crew are awesome and Efraim is hilarious!! I love this place.

Geat street tacos, very authentic, carne asada and el pastor both are awesome.

    (5)
  • Elizabeth R.

Hm, I guess the tacos are pretty good for these parts. But the meat just strikes me as so dirty I have trouble enjoying it. The horchata is that sugary soda kind, Ole or whatever, which is always disappointing. I guess if I'm looking for Mexican food in Solana Beach I'll head to Robertos, maybe it's just habit.

    (2)
  • Ellen M.

I defy anyone, anywhere, to eat at this place and not love it. It is that good, that authentic, that fresh, that cheap. Takes credit cards. Good portion sizes too. Anyone giving this place less than 4-5 stars does not know a thing about Mexican food.

    (5)
  • Mike D.

GREAT carne asada. I get the CA burrito all the time. The breakfast burrito was just okay for me, and the carnitas burrito was a disappointment. But for carne asada, this place is dialed in. I go here all the time for it.

    (4)
  • Matt G.

Nothing wrong with the food here. Overall a pretty good burrito. Downside is that there is no real seating, and the atmosphere is kind of strange (feels like ordering food at a gas station). But if all you need is a quick Mexican food fix, they have what you need. If you want a restaurant, best to try somewhere else.

As I said in my review for the Carlsbad location, Rudy's has the BEST burritos (carne asada, carnitas, and everything else). The difference between this location and Carlsbad is that they pack in the meat here. Their burritos are mostly meat, just as they should be...especially when their carne asada is the best I've ever had. The Carlsbad location adds more guacamole to their burritos, which some people may like. Their hot sauces are slightly different as well. The Solana Beach location has more of a smoky sauce...it's hard to describe. I love both equally though. Their quesadillas are also delicious, since they are made fresh and still super hot when you pick them up. This is by far my favorite Mexican place, and if I ever move from San Diego I will have to get these burritos shipped to me!

    (5)
  • Dean L.

This is the best carne asada burrito I have ever had and I have tried lots from SD to LA to SF. It's easy to get the guac and salsa right, but the meat tastes like filet compared to what you get at Lolitas, El Indio or Bertos. The only downside is this place is inside a crappy convenience store and has nowhere to really sit down. I have also tried their tacos and they are awesome.

    (4)
  • Rosa V.

Best burrito in North County coastal, hand down. I love this place so much, that I have to eat the whole burrito, and then I can't move for the entire day. That's a good sign, that you would be willing to be in pain to consume their yummy goodness. Rudy's...you are why I live here. I love you. Nothing can replace you. I hope not, because you are really close to my house.

  • Wendy S.

Wow, what a treat! You wouldn't know if from when you drive up, but this place rocks! The food is tasty (love their salsa), the people are friendly, and the tortillas near the refrigerator section are great! They just opened a location near Carlsbad, but it's a restaurant and doesn't have the market portion... check it out!

    (4)
  • Ellen R.

Their al pastor is off the hook and they do great catering for very reasonable prices ESP if you make your own guac

Pricy for a taco shack. They weren't able to add cilantro to my tacos. Average at best.

So I've been a long time Rudy's fan but since the new management my feelings have changed. I've gone there at least a dozen times since the new owner has taken over an it's just depressing. First and foremost, the Al Pastor used to be AMAZING... but no longer. The melt in your mouth caramelization of onions and rich flavor of the pork is gone. Instead you are served dry and somewhat rubbery pork pieces that disappoint. Also, the portion size has decreased significantly, not to say you wont be full but you wont have any leftover breakfast burrito that's for sure. The addition of the seafood is nice (fish and shrimp tacos, burritos, etc) but the overall quality of pretty much everything has been impacted. This used to be the go to spot for Mexi in or office but now we split our Mexi food escapades with the longer drive to Juanita's in Encinitias. Hard to believe I could be so emotionally impacted by the new management of a taco shop but I am. See you around Rudy's... just not as often as I used to.

  • Will R.

Carne asada, breakfast, machaca, chile relleno, their soups. Just to mention a few of their bodacious items. Newly fixed up its nice and open inside, along with the classic patio setup and white T ruining red salsa that always meshes with the food

    (5)
  • Christopher W.

All of their burritos are BOMB!!! The price as most Mexican food places are definitely affordable and it is my place I go to if I am craving Mexican since it's close to my office and the food is great. I typically get some carne asada tacos and/or a carne asada, california, or adobada burrito and haven't been disappointed yet!

Great food !!! Too bad the big tall guy that works there has to be so rude to his customers !!!! Our first & last time there :0(

Chicken Cali burrito is amazing. Excellent Mexican street food. And now you can order through texting in the order. This place just keeps getting better!

    (5)
  • Victoria A.

The only reason that they lack a star is the carne asada did not look or have the same texture and felt like tongue to me... Anyways, the adobada and the carnitas tacos and burritos are the best I've had in San Diego. The horchatas are huge and the people that work their are super friendly.

BEST CARNE ASADA (and coke zero) IN SAN DIEGO. I just moved to boulder, co and have dreams about this place. ask for the salsa verde. mmmm. heck yeah

Tried the California burrito. The dry, braised flavor of the beef was something I wasn't used to. I might come back to try other menu items.

OHHH NOOO!!! I was so excited to try this place! Lots of good reviews and its literally 30 seconds away from my house! I ordered 3 street tacos. 2 carne asada and 1 Al Pastor. When I opened the foil with my 3 tacos it smelled a pretty off. Hmm maybe its just the marinade so I had a bite. The meat was most definitely old and/or very poor quality. I am by far the least pickiest person but there was something wrong with the meat. I will try this place out one more time for a veggie burrito. i just hope my experience will be good next time around!

Delicious little place my sister showed us in San Diego. I would go back if I lived in the area. Check it out for no frills on the go grub for a great price. Did I mention it is also delicious? :)

  • Audrey T.

My friend works around here so she picked up two burritos for lunch. We had the carnitas burrito and California burrito. The carnitas was hands down, the better of the two. The carnitas were very moist and tender--pure perfection! The steak in the Cali burrito, on the other hand, was disappointingly dry. The fries seemed like they were day old too. But, I give Rudy's 4 stars because the carnitas burrito was one of the best I've ever had, YUM!

    (4)
  • Ryan S.

Rudy's makes a seriously legit breakfast burrito. After checking out some of the reviews on Yelp and always being on the search for a great BB, I knew I had to stop in. I went with the standard breakfast burrito which has bacon, potato, cheddar cheese, and egg and well...it was freakin' excellent. The potato and bacon both had amazing and distinct flavor and it wasn't greasy whatsoever. I really look forward to going back and trying some more of their other menu items.

    (4)
  • P H.

I went in here to get a breakfast burrito and I left before even ordering something. They have these weird pretentious signs that immediately turned me off. " don't order sour cream in your burrito we aren't Taco Bell" ok wtf i have Mexican relatives who serve authentic Mexican all the time with sour cream...Makes no sense. " it's not sauce it's salsa" news flash salsa means sauce in Spanish. So are they just saying you can't speak English in here? Ok well then go back to Mexico if you don't want to do business with English speakers.

Excellent service and value for the food. We love the enchiladas, guacamole, verde sauce and so much more. Importantly, everything is freshly made and they even know the difference between fresh hot peppers vs. the vinegared, ruin stuff that comes in cans. Prices are very reasonable and carryout service is excellent. It is places like this that challenge the overpriced, assembly line food at places like Casa Sol y Mar. Keep it up and good luck.

Rude cashiers, rude service, food was poor quality, some of the meat was raw in my friends tacos, over charged by five dollars, and made my friend sick. Not the best place.

Alright, so from the outside it looks like this place used to be a liquor store, Well, once you go inside, you notice that it partly is. I'm not sure if they sell liquor or not but it does look like a little market (with a nice selection of porno mags for sale). I ordered the breakfast burrito (breakfast burrito # 2 - yelp.com/biz_photos/JvJa… ) and told the guy I heard some good things about their food. He said they have the best carne asada (like he's going to say otherwise?) and authentic carnitas, etc. I told him that I'll have to try the carne asada another time. They cooked up my food and a little while later called out that it was ready. I took my burrito and thanked the guy at the window. As I turned to walk away, I heard the guy say, "this is free." I turned around I saw the guy pushing towards me a free sample of their carne asada. I was shocked to say the least as I took my burrito and free sample to my table. My burrito was, by far, the smallest thing I've ever seen. I mean, I've seen myself nude in the mirror on at least 4 different occasions so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to small. It was sad because I watched the guy cook my grub but it just ended up tasting like something that you would get in a cafeteria or maybe even a microwave. To add insult to injury, I was left with an oily taste in my mouth afterwards that made me wish I had bought a bottle of water. The carne asada was good but I'll reserve final judgment until I sample it in the form of a burrito. I will pass on the breakfast burrito due to the lack of size and disappointing taste. I'll be back for the carne asada burrito another day, Rudy.

Hole in the wall taco shop. It was good...but the meat were a little dry. We had the beef tamales, and Mexican Street Tacos: chicken, carnitas, and carne asada.

  • Kim P.

You can tell that the meat they use for their carne asada is higher quality than most (or maybe all?) other Mexican places in SD. That being said, it wasn't my favorite...but still really tasty. Solid 4 stars. Come are try the carne asada and find out what everyone is raving about.

It doesn't matter how good the food is, if the people running it display a general contempt for their customers. They hang signs up letting you know that they think you are a stupid gringo. "We don't have SAUCE, we have salsa!" "Lime is for Corona, not bean & cheese burritos!" And my personal favorite, since I have been a regular in there for over eight years and never place an order where I didn't ask for sour cream.. "Sour Cream does not go on burritos. This isn't Taco Bell, it's Mexican food." Tacky, tacky, tacky to treat paying customers so rudely. I will not return, even though they are right next door. I'll walk down the street to Fidel's where they serve my food with a smile and a thank you, even if I do put sour cream on my burrito.

I usually work out of La Jolla whenever I am in San Diego. But I always try to make it out to Rudy's for my favorite carnitas burrito whenever I visit. I enjoy fine dining and good food. But nothing beats a a find like Rudy's. Great food for a great price.

  • Scott M.

Rudy's is a GREAT "hole in the wall" place. The carnitas plate is huge (and my personal favorite) - easily enough for 2 people (or lunch and a great breakfast the next day). We have friends from out of state who insist on going to Rudy's every time they come to visit and we gladly oblige.

best authentic Mexican food in San Diego!!! no hot sauce just salsa :) Carnitas rock!!!

  • Jim Y.

I've been here about 5 times and ordered their carne asada burrito. I can say that about 3 of those times, the meat was a bit burnt and a bit on the jerky side. I would speak more highly of this place if their food was a bit more consistent. This may be the spot to go to for north coastal San Diego people, but I'm gonna have to stick to my down south Mexican food joints. No frills - located in a liquor store, parking is a bit difficult to find at times, nice employees.

This is my first time writing a review, But i felt convicted to write a review about this place. The review indicated that the meat was Savory and delicious. All the reviews indicated to eat at this establishment. So I just had to try it. Now for the review..... This place sucks. If you are used to authentic Mexican food then do not try this place. And the worst part of it all was we all had a stomachache.

The veggie burrito is wonderful, easily the best in North County. It's so stuffed with goodness that it really requires your full attention to manage, so don't get it and try driving. Of course, if you're really in a hurry and must drive and eat, Rudy has you covered with the more manageable BRC. Then for breakfast there's the bean and egg burrito and the huevos rancheros. (Really don't try driving and eating the huevos rancheros at the same time. At best you'll make a mess, at worst you'll be dead. At least you'd die happy I guess...) If you can, take your burrito out back to the patio to enjoy the beautiful weather and, more importantly, gain access to unlimited amounts of their amazing red _salsa_ (not sauce!). Parking is always a little stressful in their small lot, but you usually find a spot if you keep your eyes peeled. Only thing I didn't enjoy from Rudy's so far was the chile relleno torta. May have just been an off day though. Overall, great burrito joint. Best Mexican food in the area *and* cheapest. What more can you ask for?

If you want a great Carne Asada burrito and you are in the area this is your place. It is cooked right, seasoned perfectly and the price and proportions are great. Aside from carne asada they have carnitas, al pastor which is my favorite, lengua, cabeza, and chicken. It is authentic and amazing.

Was down here for the Culinary Convention this past Sunday and was starvin' for some Messican since my friend and I were so close to El Mexico. Agreeably some of the best Carne ASADA I've had at a taco/burrito joint. They use some nice thick pieces of steak (flank? skirt?) Thick enough to really sink your teeth into. Top it with some fresh salsa and a tasty tortilla and you've got yourself a pretty darn good burrito. Un-watered down ORANGE BANG (IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE, MAH GAWD?!?!?!?!!!!) bumped this place up .5 stars for me. The carne asada burrito is a solid 4 to me, but -.5 for being cold, - .5 for a shit ton of flies EVERYWHERE, +.5 for cocaine infused Orange Bang. +.5 for unlimited refills :o I will say though, the burritos are average sized.. nothing behemoth like I had hoped for (and some of the other reviews said)

Best California burrito, hands down. They do something different with the meat there... it's not these chewy hunks of tasteless beef that I get at other places. These are well seasoned, a little dry, almost shredded but still tender. The only reason why I took one star off is because sometimes the meat is too salty. Chewy soft tortillas. I always get guacamole and sour cream ...I don't care what the sign says. Plus you can get coke in a glass bottle, not a can. If you've ever tried soda from a can vs from a glass bottle in the same sitting, you will notice a metallic taste from the can. Oh yeah, and their hot sauce is the best... not super hot, but flavorful. It's a total hole-in-the-wall type place... like a Mexican 7-Eleven, but the last couple of years, they've expanded their seating from a stainless steel long table attached to a wall like an afterthought to a friendly outdoor patio place with umbrellas.

Talk about a double whammy HORRIBLE food and even worse service. Maybe if you want people to come back you shouldn't insult them when they order. All i wanted was a Cali burrito with no potatoes and the little b-word of a cashier rudely told me well thats not really a Cali burrito then, its like f-you, she wouldn't even have a job without customers. Another thing is the rude signs posted by the owner correcting customers on how they should order, why would you want to make someone feel bad for wanting sour cream or hot sauce pretty crappy business plan if you ask me. Do yourself a favor go to Roberto's where the food is awesome and the workers all nice. If I could give this place negative 5 stars I would. Everything else in the shopping center is awesome like the deli and pizza place to bad Rudy's has to ruin it and if that's what they call carne asada I'd be scared to try they "ground beef" I don't how this place stays in business when it sucks so bad

GREAT price for GREAT food that will hit the spot! Breakfast burrito is awesome. I went with a couple of friends to eat, one of them ordered a chili releno burrito and for some reason, her's took exceptionally long to make. When i went up to check on it to see if they had forgotten, the owner felt so bad, he gave us all free drinks (HORCHATA FTW!) and even an extra burrito that they had accidentally made. The people working there are really nice The location is pretty hole in the wall and not the cleanest, but as soon as you take your first bite, you quickly forget ^^

This Rudy's is definitely a hole in the wall type place. It is located inside a small market. I got the Al pastor burrito which was really tasty. Lots of meat and not much else in it. I'd like to see some rice or something in it too. We spoke with Rudy himself and he gave us free sodas. Super friendly guy.

Just moved into the area and like small independent Mexican restaurants. This one however made my stomach hurt and sent me racing for relief. The food wasn't anything special and the funny smell upon entering was a sign I won't ignore next time. I guess this place works for those on a budget and are use to eating questionable food. I had two tacos and beans. I didn't give a one star ratings because it was only one visit.

I must have drove past this place a thousand times before I actually stopped in here. It looks like just another hole in the wall greasy Mexican taco shop. Boy was I wrong!! I ordered the carne asada burrito and BAM, best carne asada I have ever had! And I have eaten at many different mexican places. Its better than any of the nicer restaurants like su casa, las olas or fidels. Everything is pretty top notch here, but not as good as the Carne Asada so don't order anything else until you've tried it. I'll definitely be getting off the I-5 to stop in here every time I head north.

Food: Carne Asada Fries ($6.50+tax). The amount of sour cream and guac is tremendous! The portions aren't as much as some shops but it'll definitely get you there. The actual carne asada is legit, so delicious in slices rather than little chunks. The fries were on the salty side, but that could be easily remedied. Service: Service with a smile, and a reasonable speed. They speak clear English which limits the possibility of mucking your order. Atmosphere: Its actually a liquor/convenience store with a full service taco shop in it. Seats are beyond limited, don't plan on bringing a group of ppl here, if fact don't plan on eating here in general. They have a assortment of Mexican candies here, but i can't comment much more than that. Final Cut: Carne asada, one of the better ones in SD, but not worth the drive from Mira Mesa to Encinitas for. 7/10 I'll return if i'm ever in the neighborhood.

For North County San Diego, there is nothing better or faster than Rudy's. Their carne asada burrito is the best I've had, anywhere. On weekends, the chorizo and egg can't be beat. If you just need a snack, grab a couple of street tacos or the plain cheese quesadilla.I always get a side of the spicy carrots as well. Word to the wise. The have salsa, not hot sauce - try the salsa verde. Be sure to not forget the imported Mexican soda - Coca Cola, Sprite, Pepsi and Fanta.

Okay, disclaimer...all I can speak to is the Al Pastor Burrito. It was awful - as my hubby put it, "tastes like manwich sauce in a tortilla". But, the guys working there were super polite, food came out fast, and it gets great reviews so maybe we should try something else, not sure. Also, the extras we ordered and paid for in our burritos didn't make it into them. Prices were good for the portions.

I really wanted to like this place since it seems to get pretty good ratings on yelp plus my boyfriend's boss raves about it all the time. I had the carne asada burrito. Oh dear...why is this burrito cold? The tortilla was tough and very dry :( The carne asada was also really dry and some parts of it were really cold just like the tortilla. The guacamole that they put into it was flavorful but that was the only thing that was good. My bf had the carnitas burrito and he said that he was really good. In fact it was so good that he went again less than a week later. His burrito was warm in all places and the carnitas was moist. Parking is a bit of the pain since this is in a small strip mall, but if you come on the off hours you should be fine. Everyone also raves about the street tacos so I will give this place another try. Maybe I just caught them on a bad day Price for one burrito: around $4.50. The size is your standard burrito size.

  • Wayne L.

Probably the best carne asada I've had at a taco shop. Most places mince up their carne asada and disguise the flavor of the meat by making it overly salty. Not Rudy's. Marinated, and grilled... the flavor and texture is undeniably steak. Prices are super reasonable, but call ahead during the lunch rush as the place fills up and the parking lot is rather cramped.

As my friend would say, this place was "ehhhh". A restaurant run with a small liquor store combined. I liked that I could buy whatever drink I wanted with the meals bought, but that's something else. I ordered the Carne Asada Burrito, and all I could say about it is that it was alright. The meat was kinda weird to me, felt more like beef jerky than usual carne asada you'd find in regular burritos. Good portions of guac and every other ingredient, so no complaints there. Their salsa/sauce thing they gave in the bottle to eat it with was pretty good, but it didn't add that much flavor. The "Mexican Street Taco" with Al Pastor, however, was pretty dang good. It was really small though, but only like 1.35 each. It tasted really good, and did well imitating the Mexican tacos. I give 4 stars alone for those. Store wise only outdoor sitting, so coming on a rainy day would be terrible. But I'd def go back for the tacos. 3.5 stars, to be exact.

  • John P.

Terrible! My California carne asada burrito meat was burnt. (picture coming) The street tacos were flavorless. Worst I've ever had. The chicken burrito my friend ate was bland as well. We didn't finish our food? We were brought in by the 4.5 stars yelp reviews. Never been to a place that had such high marks where the food was this bad. Something's fishy.

Al patron as recommended. Spicy kick for sure. Great little hole in the wall. The kid that took my order was a little rude but the guy at the window outside was a jolly guy that just laughs. Its a good place. I'll ck it out again to try their Carne. Overall it was good. I can't really judge it based on the Al Patron, because it's probably not my favorite.

This is my favorite quick mexican restaurant in San Diego! We call it the Gas Station because of the mini-mart connected to the food area, but don't let that fool you the food is amazing, the guacamole is amazing! Limited seating but most people take food to go so seats open up quickly.

This place is pretty good. I 've had it twice now. The first time was when I had someone bring me back a carne asada burrito and I wasn't very impressed, but I figured I had to give it another shot because food isn't the same when you have someone drive there and bring it back. Since I work on Stevens Ave I'm able to walk there so we went to Rudy's for lunch today. I just had an awesome carne asada burrito from El Nopalito yesterday for lunch but I want to give Rudy's the benefit of the doubt. The moment I walked inside I was engulfed with the most awesome smell of grilled meats. If I closed my eyes I could imagine that I was at a backyard barbecue on a Sunday afternoon. It smelled so delicious inside. The place is a Mexican market to pick up select groceries. The carne asada is as other people mentioned - tender and moist. Not tough little pieces that you're used to finding at other burrito shops. Overall I'm stoked to have Rudy's in walking distance to work, however if I have time I'd still make the drive up to El Nopalito.

Had a Carne Asada burrito here today at lunch. One of the better Carne Asada burritos I have had. $8 for a burrito and a soda is a little above average but the burrito was quite large and I think it was worth the cost. The tortilla was awesome, the meat was grilled pieces of steak. They have not followed the unfortunate trend that other taco shops are following with roasted hot sauce. I prefer the traditional.

Looking for a new place to spend my lunch break, my co-worker highly recommended me to check out Rudy's Taco Shop. Although a little skeptical at first, my co-worker did not disappoint. I've tried plenty of carne asada burritos around San Diego County and I've got to admit that Rudy's Taco Shop offers the BEST carne asada burritos EVER! From the very first bite to the very last bite, the carne asada was packed with so much delicious flavor because it is extremely well-marinated and perfectly cooked. If you're looking for a carne asada burrito in which the meat stands out as the star, you definitely have to come to Rudy's Taco Shop! If only they were open 24 hours to satisfy my late night cravings!

Rudy's is one of my favorite spots for lunch. Everything I've tried here has been good - the burritos (chicken, chorizo, carne asadra), the regular tacos, the street tacos. It's cheap, good and fast. The people are friendly too! There's a mini grocery store and a place to get cashier's checks in Rudy's. You can also get flowers at Rudy's! The parking lot is small so I recommend parking on the street and walking to Rudy's or it could be a big hassle. Bring cash or spend more than $5 to use your credit card.

We found this little hole in the wall taco shop attached to a market because of Yelp. We were in Solana Beach and wanted to find a new spot and we were very pleased finding this spot. I had the carnitas and carne asada plate which came with huge portions. I could make 4 tacos. You pretty much have to eat outside so if it's a bad weather day, don't come here. It's very casual and extremely cheap. Great spot if you're heading to Solana Beach.

Tucked away in a little strip mall just north of the race track, Rudy's at first glance would seem to be just another Mexican mini-mart that would be at home any where back in the hood. You've got a decent meat counter right when you walk in the door and assorted goods and sundries for purchase to your left. But the food is definitely the star here. I haven't tasted carne asada like this at any of your typical Mexican joints. The meat here tastes like it just came off your friend Angel's uncle's grill and quickly placed on to a tortilla with crema fresca, guac and that's it. Simple, fresh and best of all DAMNED TASTY. I'll come here every couple of weeks as it's slightly out of the way for work. But it's definitely worth a stop before heading to the races.

I'm hesitant to try anything other than the California burrito . . . Can it get better than this? I think what sets this apart from most other take out dirty hole in the wall Mexican restaurants in San Diego is the carne asada. It isn't steak, it is more of a stewed beef. It gets cut with not against the grain. I only get three things: the burrito the red sauce and a Mexican coke. So I have no idea how anything else is.

Don't go at lunch, you won't find parking. Carne asada tasted like beef jerky. Guacamole was ok. SKETCHY looking little place inside, but it's not bad if you need a burrito fix.

Oh, Rudy's, Rudy's, Rudy's. I dream about you at times. Those other taco places couldn't hold a candle to you. I'm pretty sure I don't want to know what it is that you put in your litle bundles of goodness, but I do know that it is magic, and I'm not one to mess with magic. I'd never order a steak anywhere, but your carne asada burrito is like crack for a burrito lover. I'm normally a fish burrito girl, but after trying your carne asada, California, and carnita tacos, I just can't seem to break the pattern. It's just that good. I knew I shouldn't have written this review. There goes the goodness from my run this morning. Off to get me a pound of heaven.

Rudy's has some seriously delicious tacos! My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place by looking at the most highly rated Solana Beach restaurants on yelp (I'm serious, we have nothing better to do with our time..). Whenever I make my way down to SD, I stop by this little restaurant-inside-a-convenience-store for their Mexican street tacos. These little gems are available in a variety of meats for $1.25 a pop. If I'm hungry, 4 will usually make up a satisfying lunch. Meat highlights include cabeza (stewed beef cheek/head meat that is soft and flavorful) and pastor (pork BBQ that tastes a little like american BBQ, but spicier and more orange). The carnitas--which are usually my favorite--are ok: theyr'e not as ridiculously greasy as I would like them to be. Rudy's stands out from other taco shops in that their meats just seem to be higher quality than in other places. Everything is really well marinated and extremely flavorful. Even their chicken is deliciously soft, moist, and tasty, and I'm not usually a chicken fan. Additionally, their food is not very greasy compared to other taco places, which is always a plus. Parking can be difficult in the tiny parking lot (which is shared by quite a few other businesses), but there is a lot of nearby street parking. There are two eating areas: a long, thin counter in the store which seats about 5 people, and an outside patio area with about five or six tables. Service is not the friendliest, but they always give you your food quickly.

There is so much good mexican food in San Diego, it is hard for me to give many places 4 or 5 stars, but this place is definitely a 3.9999. Food is good, and fresh. Doesnt take long to get your food. But can be a little tricky making sure they make what you are ordering. Be very straight forward about what you want. The Carne Asade burrito is pretty darn good... the carne is a little different than most places, so just be prepared for not your "typical"

Rudy's has got to be the best little gem on the north coast for breakfast burritos! On your way to a morning coffee and deep breath of the fresh ocean air? Stop by and pick up one of their amazing breakfast burritos but DO NOT forget to grab plenty of the red salsa which is spectacular. You will NOT be disappointed. Need a quick fix during lunch? Call ahead and order over the phone or ask them about their text message ordering. It can get REALLY crowded and busy at this little market/taco shop bu thtey try to make it as convenient as possible. Happy munching!

  • Sam M.

Before I tell you that Rudy's is the best, let me paint a picture of the kind of atmosphere it has: With the same swipe of your credit card, you can get an ice cold horchata, an international calling card, a lotto ticket, chicharones, and a carne asada burrito that will make you want to buy another one just to spoon with. The place is ran by some cool Mexican people, most notably the twins (who I think own the place). I used to live close and call in an order every few days. They have caller ID, and after a couple weeks, the guy would pick up the phone and say "Hey Sam! How are you today, amigo? Carne asada burrito, no salsa fresca?". Now a quick note about the food...I am definitely a burritophile, and I've tried dozens and dozens and dozens of different taco shops in SD, OC, and LA. Rudy's...is...the...best....period. Where's the button for 6 stars?

Rudy's is terrific. Cheap and fast and delicious. And they have a market in case you want something authentic from the Old Country. Except I'm not from the Old Country but you get the idea. Go now and you will be hooked forever. And don't forget about Bongiorno's directly across parking lot sometime for great pizza.

I really wish I could write a good review since I know how bad it is to get a bad review, my boyfriend owns a restaurant in North County. This place was responsible for making me get a 'Yelp' account, just to vent about how terrible my entire experiance was. If there was a '0' option it would have been clicked. It was between this place and Robertos off Torrey Pines road in Del Mar, Ca. One of my friends suggested we go there instead, that this place had the best burritos ever. So me and my gal pal went, I love to try new things. When we got there, the owner Rudy was the one who rang us up. As I was ordering my carne asada burrito with sour cream and cheese added, I do this to everyyy carne asada burrito I ever get, he rudely tells me I am ruining the burrito and that this is a real mexican food shop. I politely tell him I will order what I please and that im almost sure sour cream is very mexican. Then as I am waiting for my food I notice he has a lot of hand-written signs about "dont order sour cream in your burrito, its not taco bell" and that he only has salsa, not 'sauce', which I felt was an indication he has a problem with regular people ordering what they would like and also with how they say it. I feel that is very rude. When I got my food and went home (I am from Poway, 20 mins away) I took just one bite and was discusted with the low quaility of what I ordered. Yes, it may have only been 8 dollars but the fact is, he was rude when I ordered and ontop of that this has to have been the worst burrito i've ever had! Like I said before, this is my first review and i've had no inclination to ever be 'that person', who writes bad reviews. I am sorry to say that cannot say this was a great experiance, and the worst part my friend is moving to San Fransisco on Saturday and this was her last mexican experiance!!! Her review would have been much worse and would have compared the meat used to actual dog parts. I hope Rudy changes the way he presents himself and maybe take down those tacky signs because it really make the place look trashy& him like a real ass hole!

ate a carne asada burrito and carne asada fries (i know, overkill on the carne asada). both were gREAT. the carne asada is a little different here compared to most places i've been to. the meat is a bit drier and has a texture almost like beef jerky? (hard to explain) but it's still very very tasty. definitely worth trying if you're in the area or even if you aren't.

decided to finally try this place out with the wife recently, after driving by for years. well we were not at all disappointed by the decision. carne asada was amazing. it's also a convenience store, so you can pick up some beer to wash down this great mexican food. menu was good, and prices reasonable.

You know you're in for a treat when you walk into a taco shop and feel like you're in Tiajuana. Seriously, the set up reminds me of a little Mexican market. While Rudy, the owner, is a really nice guy, the chick who took my order was less than enthusiastic about talking to me. My coworkers have been raving about this place for a while, telling me how incredible the food is and how I need to try the rolled tacos and oh the California burrito! I ordered the beef rolled taquitos. I wanted to dock this place some points for freaking calling them rolled taquitos instead of rolled tacos, but refrained. My rolled tacos were good, not incredible by any means, but good. The guacamole was really good and fresh, and the tacos themselves were good, especially given the fact that they used shredded beef instead of ground beef. Overall, not a bad place to get some food. For 4 rolled tacos, pardon me, taquitos, and a drink, it was under $6. Not too shabby. Maybe the next time I go, I'll try the California burrito, perhaps that'll bump it up to 4 stars. More than anything, the speediness and the price of the food make this place desirable for a girl on a budget for lunch.

I can't resist their carne asada burritos. mostly steak, very tasty, well-seasoned and lean. A large meal for under $5.

You'll never go back to the "berto's" type taco shops after Rudy's. Yeah I will admit that I used to frequent the "berto's" type places so common in SD, and even thought they made a pretty tasty carde asada burrito. But after coming to Rudy's, there is no comparison and I will never go back to those other taco shops again. Let's start with the meat. Rudy's does not cook up the chewy little watery pieces of meat other taco shops do. Rudy's uses high quality beef and you can certainly taste the difference after one bite. Second, this place still uses real guacamole with nice chunks of avocade, unlike some places where they substitue what is supposed to be guacamole with cheap green sauce thinking that you won't notice the difference. Third, their prices are on par with what you will pay at other taco shops, but the quality is so much better. Rudy's carne asada is the best I have had, but also try their carnitas burrito. Absolutely amazing. Whatever they do to that pork to make it so tender, juicy and flavorful is nothing short of astonishing. The only downside is the limited seating inside and outside. During weekday lunch, finding seating can be an issue, particularly for groups larger than four. Parking is also limited in the complex Rudy's is located in. The service is friendly and quick. I highly recommend Rudy's and will continue to go their for my Mexican fix.

I live right down the street from Rudy's and I am SO glad! It is definitely my go-to taco shop, AND it's got basic necessities as well that I often end up purchasing. They have pretty much everything you need. When I'm out of ketchup, I just run out real quick and I can get it at Rudy's. As far as the food, it is great. You can tell it is the real deal because it's the Mexican place that Mexicans actually eat at. I always usually get the same thing: a bean and rice burrito with potato and guac. Or sometimes the veggie burrito. It's pretty much perfect. My hub usually gets the carne asada or california burrito, and he loves it. I would say he goes there more than I do. I think the meat is seasoned differently compared to other Mexican joints, he says that it's just better. And Rudy is always really friendly and helpful. He knows I get a weird combo so he makes sure the guys in the back make it right. They also take phone orders which is nice and convenient if you're in a hurry.

Best California Burrito I have seen yet in San Diego. The carne asada tastes like it has been grilling all day long.

Oh man these have to be my favorite carne asada fries hands down! I usually judge a taco shop on how well they do this sacred dish, and this place passed with flying colors! The fries have always been the perfect amount of crispy and they don't get soggy quickly as do other places'. If you're looking for great food, go here. You will not be disappointed. The carne asada is also perfectly seasoned, so you won't be upset with that :)

Decent food. But the lack of customer service KILLS the experience. Please fire all middle school/high school females who clearly don't enjoy their jobs or teach them how to take a phone call.

Fish tacos, pacifico on draft and a sunny day eating outside. Great laid back atmosphere, several delicious beers on tap and most importantly fresh and tasty food. Great prices and great service, and I saw they have a happy hour and taco tuesdays even. I will definitely be back.

The best breakfast burrito I've experienced is from this place. Very unassuming from the outside, but everything is made from scratch, the salsa selection is outstanding, and the staff is very friendly. This is the epitome of a local Mexican joint.

I've been going to this place since I moved to San Diego more than ten years ago. Their cabeza burritos are amazing. I highly recommend it.

Love this place! Authentic Mexican at its finest! The staff was really nice and apologized for the fact that they were currently in the process of renovating. Love the new industrial decor they've incorporated. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Every time I come to San Diego, my wife and I ALWAYS make sure this place is on our schedule. The taste of the Carne Asada is amazing! Salsa bar is open. Pricing on the food is fair and customer service is great. In my opinion it is a "Hole in the wall" taco shop but overall it's amazing. If your going to San Diego, GO HERE!!

3.5 Stars because... Not authentic horchata, it's from a fountain! :( Wednesdays, their Baja Fish Tacos are the special. My friends got some of those and liked it, especially with their avocado salsa. I got the Grilled Shrimp Burrito (the burrito special of the day) and that was pretty yummy as well. I would say the shrimp:everything-else ratio was a bit slim though. Shady path to get to the bathroom. Not really a restaurant.. more like restaurant/liquor-store combo. You're coming here for a quick drop-in to eat, not a great quality time. There was a parking lot for the several small businesses to share, but it was a bit small. **YOU CAN TEXT IN YOUR ORDER. That's sorta cool.

I am a longtime lover of Rudy's, but I was so disappointed tonight. At this point, I don't even care to come back again. I can find somewhere else with great service and food. I was rudely told "we close the kitchen at a quarter to." I looked at the clock on their kitchen wall and it was 18 minutes till closing. You lost two customers due to poor customer service.

Best Chile Verde, I have tasted in several years. Lots of meat and spiced exactly the way I love it.

So disappointing. Went based on yelp reviews and it might have raised our expectations but even without that, it would have only been sub par. Too much batter on the crispy and fried fish tacos that was totally soggy. Extremely dry chicken in the taquitos. Would never recommend or go back again and the new management mentioned in reviews recently must have a negative effect on food because I have no idea how this place got such good reviews.

Delicious California burrito! Finally found a place as good as the one in my hometown.

Grabbed an Al-Pastor burrito here, and hate to say I was disappointed. The size of the burrito, for one, was much smaller than other places in San Diego for the price. Now, size is meaningless if the contents of the burrito send you on a whirlwind tour of taste and flavor. Not so with the Al-Pastor here. Missing was the tender and juicy cuts of Al-Pastor, and instead I got one that was a bit too tangy for my tastes. I also did find it a tad on the drier side, warranting a few gulps of water between bites. Eventually the meat kicked in with some nice hints of spice, and overall I would commend the burrito for being light and not gut-busting like many other establishments. However, it was truly nothing to write home about. The seating and parking can be awkward, which makes it even more of a challenge, and really nothing special to go out of your way to visit.

I'm sooo pissed ! I came to this place for years !!! Best mexican food in San Diego ! Rudy you fucked up ! You should of never sold ! The new guy has changed the carne asada . Down graded the spice on the salsa and guacamole !!! He's Catering to the white people like all the rest of these places out here ! Discus Ting ... They should call it Taco Bell !! Now I have to find a new spot ! Let's see what napolito's taco shop has to offer. For all of you reading this I'm white !!! If I can give no stars I would !

Just like any other Mexican restaurant in San Diego, the menu and prices are pretty standard. I got the Carne Asada Burrito and it was too salty for my taste. I did enjoy the balance of everything through my burrito. With burritos, it's very easy for the different ingredients to be concentrated in certain areas. However, I didn't have that issue. My friend got Carne Asada Fries and it was great, but like I mentioned the Carne Asada was salty. The fries didn't have as much cheese as other Carne Asada Fries I've had, but they certainly did not lack with everything else.

The Rudy's I used to love is now history. It's time to "consciously uncouple". The ownership change has not been kind. The food is of lower quality (than 6 months ago), in smaller portions, and the cashiers (particularly the Ompah Lompah with the severely plucked eyebrows) seem to have a general disdain for the non Spanish speaking customers. Also, the place is infinitely dirtier than before...look before you sit! I will not be returning, and end my 4X/Week Rudy's habit. Farewell Rudy's, I hope we can remain friends.

This little hole in the wall is the whole enchilada, the gold, the motherload, the hope diamond of taco joints. Got a burrito here after catching some waves and have been dreaming of it ever since.

I'm not sure what this place is a local market, taco shop or a money transfer location? or everything together? Not impressed with food here, ordered breakfast burrito multiple times and got it cold, ordered carne asada burrito and got a small burrito with poor quality carne asada meat. Only reason i go is because is close to my work but i disappoint myself every time i do that.

I used to really like this place. When I was first introduced to SD mexican food I didn't think it could get any better, but the last time I went to this place left much to be desired. I ordered my regular carne asada burrito as well as a few of their street tacos. First of all their meats were all very dry and their tortillas were definitely store bought. I don't think I can go back to eating store bought tortillas after tasting freshly made tortillas with homemade masa. There are much better places in Barrio Logan, but this may be the best in Del Mar area.

  • Jill M.

Been here several times and the food is always great but gave it a 2 stars for the customer service. Whenever we call in an order the one girl always has attitude and is never nice or helpful. They've forgotten burritos in our order before and won't simply change out tortillas with a soup.

  • Lisa L.

Not the spot to go. Meat is not quality. The service lacks greatly. This place is overrated with the 4 and 5 stars given. Since I have not been a regular I cannot say that I knew of a better previous owner. Don't waste your time nor your money, especially since you are in San Diego where excellent Mexican food can be found at many other places.

In the past when I had a bad experience before even eating at the place I would give it one star. I didn't know how to rate this because we never stepped foot into the place. Let me tell you what happened. Wife and kids show up 15 minutes before closing on the Sunday of a 3 day holiday and the restaurant was closed. There were other people at the door trying to get in, but all they got was a locked door and people inside cleaning. When they asked if they were open the person inside said it was slow that night so they were closing. Well money lost! Also, Dude if I want sour cream on my burrito I will get it and I am Mexican! I know its not taco bell, but have you never heard of a little thing called CREMA! Look it up, it is Mexican. No loss though, family moved on to Don Chuy's down the street and spent their money there.

Man. I thought *THIS* would be the place that I'd find my elusive Unicorn Al Pastor. Still have not been able to find an al pastor here in SD that has matched what I savored in Cancun a few years back. I'm not of a mexican food type of gal, so after having my tacos here at Rudy's, I found myself scratching my head wondering 'dang it... maybe, just maybe, you will never, EVER like mexican food'. This place is tough to find - it's located in a convenience shop. A tiendita of sorts. I had called them earlier to get driving directions and the guy on phone was super cool and gave great directions. Parking wasn't an issue - found a spot in their lot pretty quickly around 11:35a. Ordered: 3 al pastor street tacos (see pic) 1 carnitas street taco (see pic) side of chips (.75c) Total was $6.57 The pastor wasn't what i expected. I dream of an al pastor w/ pineapples and tons of fresh cilantro and crisp chopped up onions. Rudy's version had tender pork but instead of pineapples, there were stewed onions (along w/ fresh onions and cilantro). I didn't really taste any hint of fruit anywhere in the marinade. Carnitas taco was alright. Tender pork, yet again, but I had to add their salsa to enjoy the pork a bit more. Their side of chips for .75c paled in comparison to the hot fresh fried chips you'd get at Santanas. Loved their salsas that came in the big - very bold spicy kick to it. This establishment reminded me of what Sam Woo is to asians. I saw mostly Latinos ordering and eating here which to me, is a good sign that this place has good Mex food. So maybe a gringa like myself isn't as well versed to give a rating b/c as I've disclosed before, Mex food hasn't always been my thing. But man, I'm still determined to find a joint that will me my Unicorn Al Pastor.

So I've tried all the good places in Barrio Logan, etc. This place ranks up there. Carne asada is great. High quality meat, large cuts, great flavor and just the right amount of char. Rivals if not beats the carne asada in the Barrio. The fries in the carne asada were great, right amount of crisp, not soggy, excellente! Generous heaping of pico de gallo, cheese, and guacamole. Now, had carnitas too. My oh my, juicy, tender, and flavorful. Think it might even be better than the carne asada which is really saying something. The salsa bar is a little lacking, not much variety and they use the TINY little containers for salsa. What the heck? The meat char is not for everyone and for some, it might be a tad salty. But I like!! Price is par. Cleanliness is par. Portion size is par. Quality of ingredients is excellent. Most importantly, flavor is BAAMM!! Oh yeah, will definitely be back if in the area, can't wait to try other items.

This place was good at one time. But the new owner is screwing things up with crappy cheap meat. I would rather go to Taco Bell than this place now. It's sad, because this place was my favorite. I would tell my friends and family about it all the time. Now I tell people to NOT go there.

Very good food. I had a beef burrito and the tortilla was made fresh. I would encourage folks to get one of the burritos.

I used to love this place. It was the best Mexican food that I had ever had in my life. Recently a different person became the owner. He's been doing a lot of changes. Visually the changes are nice on the inside, but they started using cheap meat. I can't get rolled tacos or a California burrito anymore, because now it's just like all other tack shops, fatty and chewy. It's HORRIBLE!!! The meat is the thing that made this spot the best. But the new owner is messing everything up. That's what happens when people want to save a few cents on the dollar. This place is gonna lose a lot of business unless he changes the meat back to what it was.

My husband picked up lunch for his hard-working crew for the first time at this awful place. He felt that the bag was light on takeout but was in a hurry. Come to find out the California burritos he ordered for his crew are about the size of a rolled taco. He opened it up... two french fries a drizzle of sour cream and a weird chunk of meat and it certainly was not Carne Asada. He was beyond ticked off. What a joke. What a waste.

I'm on a roll here people! I just finally started reviewing on Yelp, and wowsers, I cannot stop. Reviewing all my favorite joints?! omg too fun. :) It's the boy's roommate's favorite taco shop and he has been RAVING about this place all the time and he mentioned that we should all go here together! and damn was I not disappointed! It's in Solana beach, and located next to commercial buildings from what I remember! It has a Mexican market next to it too lol. He said the Al Pastor (pork butt) tacos were the one that we should get for sure. So we did and it was bomb.com :) We decided to try a couple more tacos and got the Pollo (chicken), Cabeza (pork cheek) and Lengua (tongue)! All of them were soooooo good and flavorful, but I have to say the Al Pastor and Cabeza were tied in first place. I like how the Al Pastor was so tender and juicy, the sauce that it was marinated was too yummy. drool. The Cabeza tacos on the other hand was tender too, but it also had the right amount of spice on it (I'm a total sucker for spicy food). We also shared the carne asada fries (obligated to try those everytime I hit a Mexican joint lol), and again, it was good. Fair amount of guac( this is important) and fresh sour cream. and lots of cheese too. P.S. You should drown all of em in the bottled salsa that they have at the counter. I was seriously gonna take it home, or drink it when no one was looking. so freaking bright and spicy. noms. But yeah, thanks Ken for taking us here!!! :)

On vacation, we stopped here after a quick yelp search for tacos and I'm so glad we did. Parking was good, but we came at an off time (2:45). They have beers on tap, which we didn't try, unfortunately. We ordered carne asada fries, a chicken street taco, an enchilada, a baja fish taco and a carnitas street taco. The fresh made tortillas were really good. Our favorite was the carnitas taco, we ended up ordering another one each before leaving. The only bad thing was the fish taco went uneaten after one bite. It was mushy and I wasn't sure if it was fully cooked or just greasy. Everything else was really good. Not a fancy place for sure but really tasty.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
